My daughter was about 10 when she acquired an allergy to rabbit. We had had rabbits since she was born and all of a sudden she was highly allergic. It was weird how it came on all of a sudden.
No fake fur for her as a teen either.....
Rabbits and cats have something in common in that they both self-groom. Often it's not the hair itself that causes the allergies, but certain proteins that are in the saliva, which are left deposited on the animal when it bathes itself.
The reason for the allergic reaction with some and not others is an over sensitive immune system that reacts to the proteins as something bad that it has to get rid of.
Interesting how Lyme and immune systems may tie into this.
