Article also mentions that Buhner doesn't believe in waking up the biofilms (I am paraphrasing). Comments?
I disagree pretty strongly with Buhner on that one. Buhner is partial to herbal medicine and tries to remedy the biofilm problem by describing a number of herbs known to inhibit quorum sensing and dis-aggregate biofilms. Claiming these do so more gently and less indiscriminately than proteolytic enzymes which may harm healthy biofilms in the GI tract. The problem is that very little research has been done on herbs that directly act against borrelial biofilms. Not all biofilms are equal so this is important. EDTA will practically dissolve staph biofilms without putting a dent into borrelial biofilms. Herbs are probably more sophisticated and I don't doubt that among all the herbs on this planet there are plenty that can dissolve a lyme biofilm, but at this point it's hard to really know if you're addressing that issue by just relying on the herbs. You'd have to find an herb that dissolves lyme biofilms AND is fairly bioavailable. Chinese skullcap seems about
the only one that might fit both of those criteria at the current time. As for the GI biofilms... this is a pretty unscientific assessment right here... But... We basically scrub the plaque off our teeth every day with no concern. In fact we consider it pretty unsanitary not to. The mucosal communities of western civilization do not reflect whatsoever a healthy microbiome. Our guts are probably as plaqued as our teeth. I don't see why gently disrupting those biofilms alongside a good probiotic would be any different to your health than brushing your teeth. 99% positive most of us here and elsewhere have more harmful biofilms than good.
I don't think Buhner thinks biofilms are unimportant though. Biofilms are arguably the keystone of chronic infection. All the persister cells in the world don't matter unless they're embedded in biofilms where the immune system can't get to them. If you're not making your gains with treatment I would hesitate to treat the biofilms. But I would probably treat them along side an abx or antimicrobial so you don't just encourage the infection to spread. But what do i know. Just my understanding
