You gotta wonder why they are communicating this now - I didn't read through this thoroughly but no new info?
For the record, I am on long-term IV abx AND herbs so I am a product of this mixed marriage... But before I even knew I had Lyme & co I was prescribed levofloxacin for a nasty and relentless sinus (fungal) infection, and 2 doses put me into anaphylactic shock. But also gave me neuropathy that I struggle with to this day.
I had been given many courses of various abx over the span of 13 months for the sinusitis and bronchitis I effectively. These abx definitely stirred up Lyme & co which is how I finally got dx after 16+ years!!
After thinking about
this for the past 3 yrs, and learning about
Lyme & co... I now suspect that the levofloxacin (commonly prescribed for Bart) stirred up Bart like a tornado. Along with the typical Achilles and tendon issues you hear that it creates, around this time was when my feet felt like I was walking on glass, were stiff and painful as were my hands. Also, that's when these horrible GI attacks started... Once every 4-5 wks...
The GI attacks would resume while on A-Bart and stopped when I was off it. But a lot of the other tendon and muscle pain subsided while on A-Bart and started again when I went off it. Then got better when I started the vancomycin for Bart.
One thing that is curious to me is that this neuropathy the drug causes sounds like the same sx as Bart and herxing from treatment for Bart. So it begs the question - are people with this reaction actually herxing due to a Bart infection (that they are either treating or don't know they have and taking the abx for something else)? And then they stop taking it abruptly, so the odd sx continue because they've stirred the hornet's nest but aren't doing anything about
it?
While I remain dubious about
this drug, I don't think it's a coincidence. In fact, with the way these drugs are studied in trials it seems very likely that in SOME people, the associated herxing from them is misunderstood as "dangerous side effects" and people discontinue taking them.
Example: I nearly fainted from my first dose of an antifungal Rx -because the immediate die off overwhelmed my heart. I continued taking it without incident for a year after that (I wasn't aware of the heart warnings at the time and this might not be safe for everyone to do). What I should have done is halve the dose. But clearly, I experienced a herx, not a life-threatening side effect.
Is my continued neuropathy (which is MUCH better now) permanent damage? Is it Lyme? Was it a Bart herx? Is it permanent damage from TBD? Will they resolve with continued treatment? I DONT KNOW.
So I think drugs are just one big experiment and you need to know what you are doing.
