I am going to try and make tinctures of some powdered japanese knotwood and hott I have in the freezer. Do you know what ratio is advisable? 1:2? 1:3? 1:4? I think there are a few of you out there who make their own tinctures.
THANKS!

Buhner recommends a 1:5 ratio for Knotweed, but I don't know about
the other herbs. You'd have to look each one up. Buhner explains how to reach a 1:5 ration here:

Aha! A question I can now answer :D As a general rule dry herbs is 1:5 and fresh herbs is 1:2. It's insanely hard to get fresh herbs in 1:2 IMO. As for the percent menstruum that is debatable and I don't remember what buhner says

The alcohol percentage varies by herb with 50% being the most common (and that's using Buhner's recommended grain alcohol).
I bought 24 oz jars and put 4 oz of ground herbs in them. I then add whatever percentages of alcohol/water are necessary for the particular herb.
For a 1:5 50% preparation, I'm putting 4 oz. of herb in the 24 oz jar.....with 10 oz of water and 10 oz of grain alcohol.
Macerating for 8 wks. extracts the largest number of constituents. Tinctures can sit past that amount of time and be decanted just before using.
Japanese Knotweed is a 1:5 50% preparation. I'm not sure what Houttuynia's might be because I'd been buying the fresh tincture from Woodland Essence.
I believe Buhner lists the "recipes" in the Materia Medica for each herb. His recommended sources do the same on their tincture bottles.
