Babesiosis treatment. Mepron and doxy?

So i went back to the doctor after my ceftin was up. So the doctor told me to refill my mepron for another 30 days. Making two months in total and they put me on Doxy for 30 days too. 100mg twice daily.

I've read that mepron and doxy should not be taken together because it decreases the effectiveness of the mepron. I can't find any credible sources i can explain myself to my health care provider.

Why exactly does it do this? And would it matter since i'm only taking 100 mg?

There are many Rx and OTC meds as well as foods and supplements that shouldn't be taken together because their chemical structures cause reactions in the body that can have an impact on their effectiveness.

Mepron is an expensive drug. I know I'd want to get the biggest bang for my buck if I was taking it.

khughes - LLMD's do sometimes use combos that will show one decreases the effectiveness of another:

LLMD MR (I subscribe to his online lyme treatment book) has these protocols listed for Babesia:

"Atovaqone (Mepron) 750mg/5ml combined with one of the following 5ml two times a day. In 1 to 2 months if night sweats or other babesia symptoms are not improving then increase the dose to 10ml two times a day. Combine it with one of the following:

azithromycin (Zithromax) 500mg 1 time a day,
clarithromycin (Biaxin) 500mg 1 pill 2 times a day,
doxycycline 100mg 2 pills 2 times a day, or
minocycline 100mg 1 pill 2 times a day."

But, having said that when I checked with the 'Drug Interaction Report' - nothing came up regarding doxy and Mepron.

Note: one of the 'experts' of bartonella treatment - Dr. M. prescribes biaxin and Rifampin together - when you plug them into the drug interaction checker - there is a moderate interaction - that each can reduce effectiveness of the other.

It must be that the 'good' outweighs the 'bad' in some cases.

Oh, so you did get an interaction between the two? I wasn't sure from what you posted...I will check again...I may have done something wrong...wouldn't be the first time..lol

cd - I didn't click on your link at first...but have since...and I see you went to a different part of the site - for information on Mepron...and I went to the place where you plug in the meds to see the interactions.

Nonetheless - there shouldn't be conflicting info on that site.

So do i take the mepron and doxy?

mepron 750/mg - i take 10ml twice a day
doxy would be 2 100mg pills a day

So do you think that would work girlie?

I'll bring it up with my doctor tomorrow over the phone if this is not a good idea.

I'm not seeing a LLMD

Well, I take Rifampin and biaxin together...even though it comes up on the 'checker' that each one could decrease effectiveness of the other.
I trust the LLMD Dr. M. who specializes in bartonella treatment that the good of combining those two outweighs the bad.

Dr. MR (who has Mepron and doxy together in his babesia protocols) is an experienced LLMD. Personally, I would trust his protocols.

I like when it says for more information on Mepron, ask your pharmacist. I know dozens of pharmacists and none of them know what Mepron is.

Concomitant treatment with tetracycline has been associated with a 40% reduction in plasma concentrations of atovaquone. Doxycycline's chemical structure is very similar to tetracycline except for a methyl group on the 13th carbon. I think it's the 13th, it's been a long time. Either way, Doxycycline is more stable and less electrophilic. Not knowing the mechanism of reduced plasma concentration, I'd guess it would slightly reduce plasma levels of Mepron. It would be similar to a chelation reaction of tetracycline and doxycycline with a polyvalent cation like iron or calcium. Doxy is much less likely for that to occur.
