Scientific backup for herb effectiveness ?

I don't doubt that many have been helped by herbs. I am a scientific guy by nature (engineer by trade), and I was wondering if there have been any laboratory experiments showing the killing power of herbs vs spirochetes? Obviously plenty of test tube experiments with antibiotics, but what about herbs ?

CBD oil (comes from an herb) has been studied - in vitro with good data showing it kills spirochetes.
Not sure if you're interested in specific herbs...or...

"The numbers of anecdotal subjective clinical improvement in chronic lyme disease with cannabidiol is increasing in numbers and it is hopeful that the in-vitro evidence from New Haven University Studies will provide hard evidence for the continued studies. I don't think the results of the studies have been published.

As traveler pointed out the Rath institute has shown some evidence of monolaurin and baicelain being effective against all forms of borrelia and Eva Sapi has demonstrated stevia to be effective. As for other spirochetes there have been a few on leptospirosis such as justidia adhatoda and andrographis. All in all though none of these in vitro studies are that useful compared to anecdote. Not many people use skullcap or stevia as a primary antibacterial for example and herbs with no evidence against borrelia cause maddening herxheimer reactions in many of us. Also, the idea of lyme being a predominately spirochetal illness is a dying idea. While it's useful to know your enemies, trial and error is what it ultimately comes down to. Doing some basic functional medicine work, grabbing some broad spectrum antibacterials and giving it a whack. If you're interested in the science behind herbalism and lyme disease Stephen Buhner has some really great books on the topic. He doesn't use a lot of antimicrobials specifically because of the lack of data, but he has some interesting approaches. Like you i come from a science background, particularly biochemistry, and am really impressed with Buhners work. It naturally has it's strengths and weakenesses, but for one mans work it is darned impressive

Aspirin comes from Willow Bark - and capsaicin comes from chili peppers...those are two I know...

i'm just thinking of doing the same...doing the herbs on the non abx days.

It was just too much for me doing it all together...and there were some contraindications that I wasn't previously aware of.

Oh, I thought it was 70-80% of all Pharm's from plants....I never read the post right.
