1000 Daisies, I agree that based on what you say it does sound like an IEP eval may be the way to go for your child especially if that's the only way to use the resource room to rest. If you get it great, if not, at least you tried and hopefully the resulting 504 will help some. As you know, doctor's notes help a lot too. Talking about
side effects from treatment and how many pills they swallow etc helped. Giving a short descript
ion of the effects of inflammation on every body system and organ helped. Also a short descript
ion of what it feels like for the child helped. I took in one of the lists/nurse docs that one of the Lyme organizations has to educate school nurses.
Regarding DS, it is too early to tell how this year will play out at the new school. In HS they expect the students to do it themselves without parents butting in and DS wants that freedom which is fine now while he's doing okay. At the initial meeting last year in middle school the group discussed 504 versus IEP and it was decided that a 504 would cover the current needs (his aren't that extensive - late pass/no tardies, extra time for work/testing, allowed to say he wasn't ready for a test just prior to test, take standardized tests in the afternoon rather than morning, self monitor for PE, be absent without penalty for illness and dr appointments etc.
DS currently is doing much better than last year so it was agreed that we'd keep the 504 in place for now at high school, but leave that option
open if circumstances change. I think we revisit it later this fall/early winter anyway. However, I hear that the high school he just started at can be stingy with IEPs but his is more unusual than most of the kids who have ASD, ADHD, anxiety or other more frequent causes of an IEP. Sadly Lyme at its worst incorporates elements of all those and more!
I wish I could remember the link to a useful article I read over the summer about
deciding which of the 2 to use. I'm sure you've probably seen this - but if not it may be helpful:
