How many here run across foreign words you don't know how to pronounce yet, or an acronym and your mind just reads it a funny way?

Example the word Houttuynia. I see that and my head says "hootenanny". smilewinkgrin

English IS my first language and I pronounced Quinoa the same way as you until I heard it said correctly on the cooking channel, lol.

It's reading words we aren't familiar with and have never heard aloud. I see many of them on this site, and can only guess how to pronounce them. Sometimes it's pretty funny.

Am I the only one besides Artermix that sees words here I've never seen before and pronounce them strangely in my head until I know better?

Oh I am sure I pronounce many incorrectly - having only seen them written and not heard them pronounced.

July I do hootenanny also!! and I call crypotlepis - kryptonite. I had all kinds of names for the herbs.

My big one was spirochete. Until hearing it on youtube called Spy ro keet, I pronounced it speer o shet.

My dad calls it quiznos ...and i callbit hootie after old trav thread ...so hottnany at the quiznos make a grain brain sangwhich..yes to the mother****er homozygous

Bluelyme, I've NEVER been able to pronounce homozygous and I see it all the time because I raise animals with color traits in mind. So I've avoided using the word.

I've just tried saying it over and over again the way I think it's supposed to sound, and came up with home-ozzy-jus. Am I close?

Girlie, I usually have to hear a word spoken correctly out loud but I'll take your word for ho mo zy guss.


Not Lyme related but my major blow was hearing the correct way Focaccia (the bread) was pronounced. Seems google can't even agree on the correct spelling. Anyway, I was wrong on all counts.

Where I live, I can get away with a lot of mispronunciations. Not only is there a regional mix of different words for the same thing, some areas provide additional flair to their words.

In our case, I'm not sure speaking our 'foreign' words to others in an incorrect way matters that much, if we do make an error, unless we're anxious to educate them on it. No one knows what we're talking about anyway and probably won't remember.
