New to lymes. My 11 year old daughter had had typical lyme pains and a strange bug bite. Took her to the ER after her not being able to sit through a play, her hips hurt so bad. I asked for a lymes test they said it wasn't nevessary. Five months later knee swelled, I took her back, they tested her. 21 days of antibiotics completed four days ago. Her calf is hurting her so badly it's keeping her up. Not sure if she did something else coincidentally or if 21 days wasnt enough. Is five months before treatment a long time? Should I push for more meds??? Thoughts??

It's typical, and also typical that a regular MD would only treat for 3 weeks which isn't near adequate.

Welcome, by the way! I'm sorry your child is going through this. My own daughter did at that age and I didn't suspect it was Lyme until my research here, over the past year.

Please feel free to ask any questions, and do look over our introduction "New to Lyme?...start here" at the top of the posted questions.

I really highly advise looking that section over, and also the various other healing paths such as natural/herbal. Also very important for your daughter to be taught the various ways to detoxify her body in order to help it move dead bacteria etc., out of her system.

It is possible for her to have other infections going on, the blood test commonly given often misses some things.

I'd like to suggest that you take your daughter to what is called an "LLMD" who is experienced in treating children, which would be a Lyme Literate Dr. who is open and educated to the more thorough protocols of treating Lyme, rather than following the CDC's limited and virtually useless standards of treatment.

If you enable your email address on your profile by clicking on the tab to make it visible to members, and start a thread entitled "Looking for a LLMD that treats children in the _________area". Fill in your location. That way we can privately email you some referrals. We don't post their names publicly.

Dokie's mom - welcome to the community. If your daughter still has symptoms, then this implies to me that she needs more treatment. Often times with lyme there is a co-infection- julymorning's link would be a good place to start. I also agree, finding a lyme literate Dr. will be a huge help to you.

I'm so sorry - your daughter was under treated.

She should be treated until symptom free PLUS 6-8 weeks longer.

As the other members have stated - it would be best for your daughter to see a LLMD for more treatment.

You are wise to be asking these questions...

For information on finding a​n ILADS ​(International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society)​ trained​ Lyme Literate Medical Doctor(LLMD) in your area, you will need to enable your email option in your profile in order to receive any recommendations, as we don't allow doctor's names and contact info to be posted on the forum for several reasons. You can enable your email option in your profile, under 'edit profile'. Be sure to click the submit button to actually save your preference.

You can send me an email by clicking on my screen name or the small blue envelope under my screen name. I may have contact information for some LLMD's in your area as well.​ ​Please include your state (or province) and area that you would like to find a LLMD in and I will be happy to share the names I have.​


You can email the Tick-Borne Disease Alliance at [email protected]​ for LLMD referrals.


You can go to The Lyme Disease Association and search for LLMD's 3 times in a month. You have to register first. Here is the link:
