Artesunate dosage - anyone take it?

I've been prescribed 200 mg twice daily.

Is that the norm?


Also wondering, if it's similar to Artemisinin...(but stronger?) - has anyone told it needs to be pulsed?

I've been told to take it twice daily.

Is there anything else in that 400mg?

The reason I ask is because Zhang's artesunate is dosed at 100mg per day.

His newer, double strength one, using dihydroartemisinin, is equivalent to 200mg artesunate per day.

So a daily dose of 400mg artesunate sounds high, but I know yours came from a pharmacy so it could be different.

No, no other medicinal ingredients...just whatever fillers the compounding pharmacy uses.

I've only taken it for two days now...and only one capsule a day.

I'm finding the 600 mg Rifampin once daily hard to handle...and have been hit hard the past few days...

I may wait until after Christmas before I do the Artesunate twice a day.

Yikes, so it's a high amount...I haven't done any research on it yet.

I started my son on 1/2 capsule for the first couple days of the first round then increased to 1 capsule. He had some headaches and increased fatigue.

He just finished the second round on one capsule (200 mg) /day. He had less headaches but had one afternoon of unbearable toe pain/burning. The next day it was gone but we noticed several little petechiae on the top of his feet. Whether that is indicative of babesia or bart?

I'm going to look up Dr. Shaller about artesunate dosage.

Dr. C rx'd 2 capsules/day for a total of 400mg but we are going slowly.

Lymemomster - I was hoping you would post! I remember you had posted about your son being prescribed the Artesunate.


I did a quick search on the internet and I saw a lot of 200 mg daily dose.(I think this was for malaria)but not 400...
It seems high.
Let me know what you find on it.

I think the petechiae is indicative of Babesia...and Artesunate is a Babs med.

Remind me - did your son test positive for babs and bart? or...clinically diagnosed for them?
So, is your son's protocol with days off? (You mentioned 'rounds')
That's good his headaches have lessened...hope that continues.

I have had a lot of back pain/burning - started when I took the Bactrim several weeks back...and now with the Rifampin 600 mg all at once...it's continuing...even worse...
So, that's why I haven't taken the full dose of Artesunate yet...I think it might put me over the edge...lol.

I'm hoping it is just killing a lot of bartonella critters.

I just realized that my LLND told me to do it 7 days on and 7 off...and repeat. oops.


I don't know how I forgot that (well, actually I do know HOW...but...)

so, I think it's been about 3 weeks (I'll check my notes...I must have taken a day break here and there when I herxed)

My doc suggested iv artensuate ..said 200 was the high end...but that main vein ..

On the riffy i found that 1.5 tabs so that 450mg once daily seems what i can hang with .like a person with out arms ...

so 200 art was the total dose...well, I'm not doing 400 daily, then.

blue - you herx bad on 600 mg?....or you never tried it?

Ya but that dose suggestion was not for oral it was iv ...

i did a a week of 600 and ya i too could not hang ..my lethargy gets worse ..my eyes get poofy ...worse diarhhea etc etc

Happy New Year to all!

My son is still taking only 1 capsule - 200 mg/day -7 days on 7days off - of the Artesunate (with 250 mg azithromycin daily). He still has headaches but I think overall they are milder.

We talk to Dr. C on Jan 6. He will prob ask why he's not taking 2 capsules (400 mg). My son seems sensitive to meds. We still have to retry rifampin.

How are you feeling?

I have only read 200 mg daily...so I am hesitant to do the 200 twice daily until I hear from someone else that they've done it.

I will wait and see what Dr. C. says to you...on Jan. 6th...lol.


The Rifampin once daily full dose (600 mg) is quite a heavy hitter...holy moly.

Haven't come out the other side yet...so not sure what the result will be.

Blue - I'm hanging on with this 600 once daily...feeling like I'm in the big leagues with this....lol
