My first appointment went well I think. He wants me to clean up my body before starting any antibiotics, so has me on a strong probiotic, a liver cleanse and a grain free diet. Avoid sugar and dairy too. He's worried about
herxing because I have that MTHR gene, so wants me to detox as much as possible first.
He did some more blood tests including CD-57 which he said is a strong indicator for lyme, but he does think I have it based on current tests and symptoms. He said my symptoms sound like I also have Bartonella. He ran more extensive thyroid tests because he wants to optomize thyroid for treatment.
I go back in a few weeks to determine treatment plan. He said not everyone needs antibiotics, but he said I'm likely to need a combination of holistic and antibiotics.
Does this sound reasonable?

Oh I think it sounds super. A doctor that prepares you for treatment is wonderful.
Many people with lyme do a combo of protocols to achieve wellness.
Good luck and I wish you much success!!

Sounds like you had a great appointment, Kat1000.
Yes, it's a great idea to prepare your body before treatment...get the support going..and detoxing...

He talked about
some things that were over my head so glad this sounds like a good path! I'm eager to start treating, so I wasn't sure if waiting a few more weeks made sense, but it sounds like it's not unusual.
He recommended a book, Beginners Guide to Lyme, and gave me a list of foods to avoid and foods to eat. Since I rarely feel like cooking these days, it's kinds of a relief to have even that much of a plan to follow.

Well sounds like you've got a good one. If he's not already in our directory of doctors, we may want to add him.

Krimpet - I don't believe he was in the directory. I found him through another member. He's only been treating lyme for about
3 years but he was well-read and familiar with other doctors (the few there are) in my area.

Kat, I love recommending Stephen Buhner's book, Healing Lyme, Second Edition. But, there is an even better book, Unlocking Lyme, by Dr. Williams Rawls.
It is the best and easiest lyme book I have read. He is a doctor (Ob/GYn) that got lyme (he had to quit his practice because of lyme) and his truths about
the disease and all about
all the different the treatments.
Why listen to me, when you can hear what a real doctor has to say about
all the different approaches to curing lyme? I'm a nobody.... special to my husband, but still a nobody that has suffered with lyme disease.

Kat,
Welcome. Your doctor sounds amazing. Getting the body ready for abx - impressive! What state is he in? Would love to know who this is.
How long does he recommend you do this before treatment?
My son and I both have that gene, and if Trav didn't tell me to test for it I wouldn't even know. My son just tested for it. Would have been nice to do this from the get go.
Sounds like you are starting out on the right track. Please keep us posted.
What is the foods to avoid list? The usual suspects - gluten, sugar, dairy, caffeine, alcohol and all processed foods?
Peteza, and easy to read Lyme book is always welcome. I love to read, but Lyme books, not so much. Too steep a learning curve with a scrambled brain.

Huddie - Remember to take the MTHFR test results to Dr. J. So you don't pay for another test.

My current doctors (saw 2 specialists today, neurologist and cardiologist) know little if anything about
Lyme Disease.
Oddly I had a fairly symptom free day today (from supplements and got some sleep).
You are lucky to see someone who is Lyme literate because these two specialists I saw were like "see a psychiatrist" and "why don't you get a job, you look fine" for the most part.
This was pretty much the treatment I got today, with some basic blood pressure meds and routine checks.
It was disappointing but I can't say I expected anything different from non-LLMD's at this point.
So I guess I self-treat for this disease that goes un-acknowledged until I get to another state that has LLMDs.
Cholestyramine is good for prepping the system to potentiate meds, abx etc. It helps with the methylation gene. I took it last night after eating terrible food and had a relatively symptom free day today with energy.

Very good game plan. Detoxing, probiotics and paleo diet will start to make you feel better just by itself. This alone can reduce inflammation and also strengthen immune health.
Setting up this foundation is a great approach. You don't want your immune system to take a back seat or be over worked on other things and actually be in the fight against lyme with the antibiotics.
You are lucky that your LLMD knows this and has educated you on it from the get go, instead of having to learn this as you go by yourself.

That's good to hear bbf! We'll take the days like that any way we can get them!
Looks like you're joining me in my self-treatment boat, for different reasons.
I did focus on your mention of blood pressure meds. You're the only person I've actually run across here besides myself that have to take them right now, so I want to give you a heads up on checking herbal or treatment methods against contraindications for those of us on bp medication.
For instance AlkaSeltzer Gold is a highly recommended form of de-tox, and I was disappointed to find a warning on it for those with hypertension or on meds for it.
There is another common detox herb that also interferes and I can't remember for sure which one, but just be aware.
I don't know if you'res is to raise your bp or lower it, just double check to make sure something you take for Lyme, etc., won't interfere with your pb medication.

I just typed a very long response and couldn't log in (thought I was logged in), so here's another version!
I'm happy to hear I'm on the right path. I was excited to see someone who listened, didn't call me a "puzzle" or shuffle me off to yet another doctor. He wasn't the most organized, imo, didn't take notes, but it sounds like he knows what he's doing. He's in the Chicago area.
Diet is no grain (doesn't like leptins), no dairy, no peanuts, minimal sugar. He gave me a probiotic, thyroid support and a powder that is a metabolic/liver cleanse which I'm to mix into a power smoothie of berries, greens mix and coconut oil/water. I have a list of do's and don'ts to eat.
He also gave me a few page summary about
treating lyme, and it mentions detoxing, like with the epsom baths, meditation and yoga.
He said he believes in a team approach to treating, with the team being he and I. He said if I'm not on board and don't want to do something it won't work. He said after reading the book, getting my immune system stronger and receiving these latest test results, we will come up with a plan together. He mentioned IV antibiotics and I don't know anything about
those. I think I may prefer oral.
I was pretty foggy yesterday and wish I would have taken notes. Today I'm very tired and struggling at work a bit. He said coffee was okay. yay!
I need to do some shopping so won't be fully on the diet until the weekend, but that's 3 1/2 weeks until next appointment so I think that's okay.
I'm feeling optomistic that I can now get better! He explained the Igenix result to me and the MHTHR that another doc had tested. He said something about
it affecting B12 and folate I think, but basically it affects the way I absorb things. My thryoid is enlarged so he tested that along with that other blood test I mentioned, CD 57. I should have those results quickly and then he'll tweak thyroid med. He prefers naturethroid over armour and told me to stop armour completely and he'll increase naturethroid. He said armour has corn (another thing to avoid).

Kat,
So glad to hear that you found a good LLMD! I also have the MTHR gene so I'm glad you found out about
that early on. A lot of insurances will not cover the cost of the MTHR meds but my OBGYN recommended shopping on Amazon where you can get the meds for around 50 versus 600. If you have a big reaction to the diet (basically too much yeast in your system) you may want to have your doctor check for food allergies. The yeast can poke holes in your intestines and when food goes through them it can cause your body to become allergic to said food. Antibiotics can help the yeast build up in the body so keep up the probiotics. The yeast can also make your brain more foggy. I also recommend taking a notebook with you to doctor appointments. They throw so much information at you and sometimes our brains just can not keep up. There is nothing wrong with writing everything down so you can go back and refresh yourself. Good luck with everything!

It really does sound wonderful! And, a doctor that sees that it's a team approach like that is hard to find! Congratulations! All great recommendations from him from what you've told us.
Please do email one of us Mods to let us know the LLMD's contact information so we can get him on our list as well - it will help many people. TIA.

diet - I read more of the info and for those interested this diet is based on a Dr. Gundry's plan.
Also I'm enjoying the book Out of the Woods. The first half is a fictional account of someone who was sick for 5 years!! Then she discovered she had lyme. The last half is regarding lyme, symptoms, treatments. I'm still in the fiction portion.
