Has anyone noticed how you cannot purchase good quality cotton anymore?

Tshirts that you buy, all have a scratchy feel to them.

Towels that you buy, have a plastic feel to them, and they do not obsorb water.

Compare 10 year old tshirts and towels, to tshirts and towels you buy today. They are not the same.

I wonder why there is this sudden, universal change in cotton material. I would imagine it has something to do with NWO type initiative. Maybe it causes cancer or something, so they can reduce the population.

Fabric softeners make cotton less absorbent. Also some laundry detergents can leave a residue on the clothes. Dryer sheets are not good either.

A lot of "cotton" is really microfiber so check the label.

I have bought numerous towels in my lifetime. Some very expensive ones. The best towels I ever bought are the ones from Costco...... They have lasted the longest and are still fluffy and not just a maker of lint in my dryer.

I mean, I just bought a brand new shirt. This is the same shirt that I bought from the same place probably about 8 years ago. I got it because I figured they'd still use the same good quality cotton that they used to use. When I opened the package today, NOPE, it's this new scratchy cotton that everyone has changed to, universally. Any shirt you buy in the store today is this new scratchy cotton. It seems like I'm the only person on the planet who has noticed that the cotton you buy today is totally different than the cotton you bought 5 years ago.

I scoured the web to find people talking about this, and I only found one lonely post on reddit.

It's the same deal with towels, except towels seem to have plastic in them these days. I went to Kohls to buy a pricey-er towel. NOPE, even the most expensive towel they had there was this plastic cotton stuff. You can't even dry yourself with the towels they make today. They just redistribute the water around your body. Seriously, if you have a towel that is like 8 years old, compare it with a towel you buy today. It feels totally different, and it's like 1/2 the absorbancy because they're putting plastic in the cotton or something.

I don't understand why I'm like the only person on the planet who has noticed this. I guess because they did it gradually, and you pretty much don't have a choice in the matter anyway.

This may be a new sensitivity thing but I can only wear a very comfortable type of clothing: it's usually 70/30 cotton/poly blend usually a blended cotton/poly tshirt. I find myself avoiding polyester and also denim seems too heavy and rough to my skin. Cotton is heavy but it is supposed to breathe. If my bedsheets aren't fabric softened I don't think I could sleep. New sensitivities to fabric are not unusual when you have these ailments.

Gfields, you are 100% right! I don't say anything online about these things because, post Lyme, it all gets added up to my view of the dark underbelly of NWO society. So, I see the world as a place where people who could do something to help us knowingly let us suffer in our own personal Lyme concentration camp and refuse treatment or any kind of coverage or disability or acknowledgment amongst the approved propaganda machines, so I fully expect that they give us plasticized towels and cheap fillers, gluten, and shellac in generic medicines etc.

But you are so right and I like the way you think, probably because it is the truth. Here in the US we have lost the middle class and subsidized the rise of the middle class elsewhere, thanks in part to the trade off to cheap towels that they were hoping you wouldn't notice.

Has anyone looked at the links I provided that tell how cotton is processed? I think that may be where the changing feel of it has come from.

100% cotton anything is almost non-existent. It's hard to find and when you do, it's ugly clothes. I assume it's because microfiber and bamboo are cheaper to produce. I'm currently trying to buy good quality clothes that last. They're more expensive, but if you get 10 years vs. 1 year, it's money well spent.

I think the other thing of it is people don't want clothes they have to give extra care to. 100% cotton shrinks with high temp drying and isn't stretchy. 100% wool felts with machine washing. So it's partly the change in processing and partly that everything gets blended with other things to make them easier to care for. I know this because I am a knitter and have gotten to know fiber quite well. Even amongst knitting fiber it is hard to find untreated wool. Most wool is "superwash" which means it has been either coated with a polysomething to smooth the scales of the wool or treated with a chemical wash that strips the scales from the wool so it no longer felts or shrinks in machine washers/dryers.
But Costco towels are awesome. And so are their saunas. And everything else.

Dogsblood, if FOH means what I think it means, that's not tolerated here. If you don't like a thread, you are not required to post.

If it's not what I think it is (I won't say it on the forum), then I do ask for your forgiveness - but would still ask that you remove it from your post so that others don't get the same impression as I did.

It looks like the Rodale link was taken down. I did read the other link. That's very interesting.

I bought a new pair of jeans at the store today. They were itchy, just like the shirts and everything else they produce today. Previously, jeans weren't made from this itchy cotton. I guess things have changed for jeans as well.

I have resorted to buying all my clothes off of ebay. Everything is pre-2000 era. When it comes in, I soak it in water and stick it in the microwave for 5 minutes to kill any scabies or bed bugs that might be on it. It comes out steaming hot. If there's not steam coming off of it, stick it back in for another minute or two. Make sure that there isn't any metal buttons on it obviously. That could be ugly. Then I stick it in washer/drier. Walla! Non-itchy clothes.

I did a google search, and apparently I'm still the only kook who is making a fuss about this online. I don't understand why I'm the only one who notices that all cotton is itchy these days. Maybe I'm nuts. I'd believe that I was nuts if I didn't notice a distinct difference between my modern day clothes and my 90s vintage clothes. But it's clearly there.

I'm a big fan of quality cotton. Cotton has become more expensive and I've noticed stores and companies cutting back their use. Cotton bedsheets have almost disappeared, and inexpensive kids' T-shirts are more often blends now.

I'm super picky about soft cotton clothes -- sensory issues and sensitive skin. I still find good quality cotton from some stores, especially Lands End. Pima and Egyptian cotton are usually very soft.

I find poor-quality cotton irritating but not itchy, though. Could you have become allergic to cotton or something it's treated with during production?
