Opinion on bite/Kids doxy dosage

My son has a bite of some sort on his low back. He said "it felt like he pulled a part of his skin off" in the middle of the night. He must have felt something in order for it to wake him up but he said it did not hurt. At first I wrote it off as a spider bite and have waited a few days to watch it. I will try to post a pic of it. I called the pediatrician and waiting for them to call back. If they will not treat, I am thinking of just giving him doxy. He is 13 and about 90/95 pounds. It looks like I can do 100 mg/2x a day? I'm hoping the ped will prescribe though. Or am I overreacting?

I would say that you aren't over reacting at all. That looks just like the tick bite I got on my shoulder not 2 weeks ago. I know it was a tick, because hubby had to pull it off of me.

I'm not sure about the correct dosage though. For his weight, I would think that 200 mgs twice a day would be best, but please don't go on my suggestion - I really don't know enough about these drugs, but I do know that he will need effective doses.

If you are seeing a LLMD, try calling them and asking what dose they would suggest - just tell them you want to be sure that your son gets adequate treatment and doesn't end up with long term consequences.

K07, this is so worrisome for a Mom.... I hope the pedi calls, but the llmd's script would probably be better.

When I got my doxy prescribed I was 125 lbs and I was taking 200 mg twice daily.

It may be a little lower for someone under 100 lbs. Yes - call your LLMD and ask.

No - you're not over-reacting...I would definitely treat him.

Tis the season I guess. Our yard is a hot bed. However, I'm not certain this was a tick, could have been a spider. BUT, I'm not feeling risky these days! I would never forgive myself for taking a chance and he got sick. We know way too much.
