Lyme's affecting injuries after a serious fall

I fell on my lower back and butt over a year ago(skiing). Had what felt like a softball jammed down each butt cheek and lower back. Felt pretty good after about 5 months. Then, two months later, out of nowhere I started getting tingling pain with burning, numbness, and an occasional warm feeling in foot. Also felt pain in shoulders, neck, and sides, along with the feeling of a "lump" in each butt cheek. Someone suggested getting tested for Lyme's. Well, it came back positive 5 days ago, Now on Doxy. Has anyone heard of Lymes causing aggravation of previous injuries, especially joints and nerves?

Sorry you have LD, but am glad you found your way here.

Yes, Lyme and co's do tend to aggravate previous injuries.

Do you have a LLMD (Lyme Literate Dr.)? If not, we can help you find one. Just start a new thread: "Looking for LLMD in/near____" and fill in the blank. Then enable your email through "My Profile" so members can send you names privately. We don't post the names of LLMD"s on here - for privacy reasons.

You will want a LLMD - because they know that LD needs to be a long-term treatment (not just a few weeks of abx) and also will prescribe the correct dosages and combinations of antibiotics.

I'm sorry you're here - but glad you found us!

Very interesting "journey" toward diagnosis. And you are quite lucky to have tested positive.

It's great that you're on Doxy - are you seeing a Lyme-Literate MD (LLMD?) - who diagnosed you and prescrbed Doxy, if you don't mind my asking? Unless it's an ILADS-trained LLMD, most MDs will not treat long enough and now is the time to figure out next steps. If you need to find an LLMD - we can help you with that - please let us know.

And to answer your specific question - YES - the opportunistic Lyme infection can certainly aggravate old injuries and any other system in your body that is under-the-weather. There are helpful ways to try to manage this and other symptoms but often, you just have to make some progress with treatment.

My neurologist likes to suggest that most neuropathy and other pains (in joints/nerves) is from inflammation so that's something you can look into.

Yes. Lyme hinders current injury healing, and resurfaces ones you though did heal.

I'm full of 30 years of sports injuries that never healed right.

After lyme treatment, I am correcting / fixing old injuries and its for once, actually working.

Thanks for the info! I am scheduled to see a neurologist next month. I am in constant pain. The painful swellings in each butt cheek and over the sacrum have never completely gone away. Now they make just sitting almost impossible. Cortisone injections in back, butt, nerve block, chiro, phys therapy. Just seem to be getting worse. Hoping treatment of Lyme's may be helpful. Will look into LLMD.

A Neurologist - unless they are ILADS trained - will not know how to deal with these infections, even though they may say they do. Unless they subscribe to the ILADS treatment guidelines, they will most likely following IDSA guidelines, which were removed from the National Guidelines Clearinghouse several years ago, but some doctors are still using it.

Steroid use is not recommended during any type of infection, and especially not with Lyme disease as it lowers the immune function, which allows the infection (which already has lowered the immune system to take hold) to spread and "dig in" even better.
