Sorry MD's are not allowed to treat chronic lyme in Canada, hence no practising LLMD's. You might be able to find a local MD to help you, but chances are they don't have a clue how to treat and may do more worse than good in the long run.

If you are really sick and you need abx treatment you will have to leave t.o. for proper treatment.

I have heard of one t.o. health care group that claims to treat (forget the name), but not sure how effective they actually are, and don't think they will/can Rx whats actually required to heal? I heard they run you around in circles with testing in an attempt to find anything possible they can so they can justify RX treatment to the med board. In the mean time you buy lots of over the counter supplements from them. Does not sound like an adequate treatment plan for lyme.

Depending how sick you are, I think you're realistic options are to either be treated with herbs by a naturopath locally, go to BC where naturopaths can rx ABX, or leave the country for ABX treatment.

Hi Dunav, welcome !

I am in BC, Canada. We are fortunate here to have LLND's who are able to prescribe antibiotics and other pharmas.

There is a LLMD (Internist) in Calgary, Alberta who is now treating Lyme Patients. But unfortunately his wait-list is over a year long..and last I heard he stopped adding to the list.

There are LLND's in Ontario if you're interested in treating herbally. Many Ontarian's cross the border to Plattsburgh. Others' fly to BC - many see my LLND. After an initial consult, he will do follow ups by phone.

WOW - Canada has 1, thats good news for a few. No wonder his waiting list is closed.

I'm hoping with the recent events (Lyme advocates meeting in the House of Commons - presenting changes that need to be made to the Lyme Disease Framework) that things will be changing for the better.

Does any other country have a framework or guideline addressing chronic lyme that Canada could adopt or would this be breaking new ground in the lyme world?

It is wonderful news for Canada!! I hope they can get it right!! And to do so would mean finding their own way for the most part, as all the other countries are basically following what the US does, which is far from good!

ILADS has Dr Burrascano's Lyme Treatment Guidelines.

But, interestingly - the advocates are not ever referring to ILADS.
I did here them mention IDSA a few times however and I was literally yelling "Nooooo!!!" at my computer screen.

I had a private "discussion" on FB with someone active in Lyme advocacy here in BC and told her my concerns.

We should be following what works for the U.S. - the ILADS (not IDSA) and not be starting from scratch IMO.
I'm concerned if they start from scratch - it won't be good enough - more like the IDSA.

The CanLyme site is out of date...I don't think it even mentions treating the bite and not waiting for symptoms.

I noticed the HEALTH CANAD.. web site says the following about Laboratory testing:
"Laboratory testing should only be used to supplement clinical findings, not as a basis for diagnosis of early Lyme disease."

So if my US LLMD gives me a clinical diagnoses shouldn't my CAN doc be required to accept this as a fact and provide me basic medical support such as monthly blood testing etc?

Yes, they should.

And if they don't accept the US LLMD's diagnosis...then they should be equipped to diagnose you clinically.
Especially if your symptoms don't fit another diagnosis ...and testing doesn't come up with anything else wrong.

So, your regular Dr. won't give you liver/kidney function tests and CBC every 4 weeks? You've asked?

Have you explained your on antibiotics...and need these tests done?

What province are you in?

I can't believe the difference between BC Dr.s attitude and the rest of the provinces.

My GP is now treating anyone who comes in with a bite - if they just think it was a tick...with 3 weeks of abx. I would prefer 4...but seriously - I'm impressed.

Wow! That's just wrong. They know you could have kidney/liver issues...and they're not testing...criminal.
