Switched from Doxy to Omnicef (Really high dose?)

Hi,

I just saw an LLMD for the first time today. My GP had me on Doxy 100 mg 2 times per day. My LLMD switched me to 600 mg 2 times per day. The pharmacist when filling it thought it was a mistake because it is such a high dose and he hadn't seen it before.

Anyone else on high doses of Omnicef and have words of advice on what to expect?

So, your concern about high doses is with the Doxy? I ask because I do know about Doxy, but not Omnicef.

For the Doxy, yes, you need at least 400 - 600 mgs daily to treat these infections. At these doses, you may need to eat just before, or during taking the Doxy to protect your stomach though.

I'm sure that others with experience on Omnicef will be along soon to offer their suggestions!

Funny you posted this. My llmd put me on 1200 mg of omnicef also 2 weeks ago and the pharmacist had to call to confirm that dosage since it was so high. But I've been on it for 2 weeks now with no issues so far. Still fill like poop everyday but no side effects.

Physedgirl09- How long have you had Lyme? Did you have neuro symptoms? I am nervous to take such a high dose, but glad to know it didn't cause any negative side effects.

Omnicef dosage 600 mg twice daily - Many people take that dose. You can't compare it with a different medication like doxy.
Doxy is supposed to be 200 mg twice daily.
mino is 100 mg twice daily
Rifampin is 300 mg twice daily.

They're all different...can't compare.

Kak - I was also prescribed the same dose with neuro sx (and cardiac). Unlike Physedgirl I was terrified of that dose b/c my symptoms were so intense and I was afraid of strong herx. So I only took half to start and so glad I did because by the third day I had a herx from hell. I was only on it for those three days & then switched to another abx but I do herx hard (in the beginning of treatment) on pretty much anything I take.

If you herxed at all on Doxy I would start slow for the first few days but that's just me.

Just want to add to please make sure you're taking very good, strong probiotics with Omnicef. It's much harder on the intestinal flora than Doxy.

Kak yes I have neuro Lyme. I was just diagnosed after a year of symptoms but looking back I prolly had it for many many years. How long have you had it? What are your symptoms?

Physedgirl- First was tingling in limbs, then came the near fainting, then a brain MRI showed white matter lesions. I have constant dizziness and feeling of vertigo since starting antibiotics (I hope this goes away soon). This all started in May 2016, so a little over a year ago. Misdiagnosed with POTs and a lot of shoulder shrugging until finally my drs ran the western blot instead of the Elisa.

What about you? What were your symptoms? Are you feeling any better on the Omnicef?

I was actually thinking of starting with a half dose of Omnicef for a week and then increasing after seeing how I felt. I also had cardiac symptoms, along with neuro. What was your herx like with Omnicef? I only felt really really tired on doxy along with vertigo.

My herx is an increase in intensity of all - and I mean ALL - of my symptoms. They would come in waves of a cluster of symptoms - start out mild, build in intensity and keep coming in wave after wave and would last a couple of hours at a time. Then it would gradually subside and there would be a break for an hour or so and start again. This went on constantly for my first 3 - 4 months of treatment and then gradually lessened in intensity & duration. I have taken Doxy and did herx but not as bad as Omnicef. As I said I only took it for 3 days so I don't know if it would have gotten easier. And it's different for everyone, depending on what infections you have; with Lyme - what form/s are being affected by the abx. Also, be sure to detox - it can help.

Kak my symptoms are vertigo/dizziness everyday, ringing in the ears, tremors/ shaking in head,face,body, my head feels like someone is punching it sometimes, a lot of eye floaters, and very mild joint pain.

I feel no different on the omnicef. Almost like it doesn't work. It's been 2 weeks though. I see my Dr on the 18th to address co infections

You've been in treatment over a year? Any improvement?

Physedgirl- omnicef 600 mg 2x/day. I saw an LLMD in Howell, NJ, not sure if that's the same one you told me about!

Yeah that's the one. I'm on the same meds as you. Did he do bloodwork?? I'm seeing him Friday to discuss my co infections and hopefully puts me on another med
