Hi there
I have just joined the forum , I have been on treatment for Lyme and co infections for 6 months , I need to have an ulnar osteotomy, a trapeziectomy and an A1 pulley release on my thumb. I am just wondering if this would be detrimental to the Lyme effects and the possibility of it getting into my bones as they will be cutting and removing bones. The surgeons over here don't know much about Lyme disease so I thought I would ask on the forum

Welcome to Healing Well! Glad you found the site. If you haven't already please take some time and read the "New to Lyme, Start here" section pinned at the top. It's filled with lots of very useful information.

I did a couple of quick searches on the surgery you need to have. If I understand correctly is the surgery to correct a pain issue in your hand/wrist? I know that's over simplifying it but if it's at all connected to swollen joints the issue may be caused by your Lyme. Treating the Lyme and possible co infections may eliminate the need for surgery.

Having any type of stress to your system weakens your immune system which is a open door for Lyme to flourish and make your symptoms worse.

Thanks for you're reply , the reasons for the pain and need for surgery is old injuries that where not diagnosed or treated have caused bad osteoarthritis in my thumb and my ulnar nice misaligned and to long causing pain and problems so it's not related to the Lyme but I am just a little concerned of the Lyme getting into the surgery site where they will cut the bone , I am on different antibiotics, antivirals and anti malaria drugs as well as lots of health products to support my immune system . Has anyone else had issues with bone surgery while suffering from Lyme .

Lyme loves to reside in old injury spots. I had torn meniscus in both knees and had them surgically smoothed out years before I got lyme. The first spot that lyme decided to go was my knees and they ached so bad.

I went to my orthopedic surgeon and he gave me steroid injections in both knees.

Guess what? Lyme loves steroids. Then it just seemed like lyme went to every place I ever had a illness or injury or surgery.

We are all just patients like you. Some people have science backgrounds so the answers they give are backed by the knowledge they've gained through their education. Other's give info as if it's fact and it's flat out wrong.
I honestly have no idea and would hate to pretend otherwise. Keep in mind people have surgery that have no idea they have Lyme.

I don't know about the possibility of it getting into your bones, but I do know firsthand that it probably will make your Lyme symptoms worse. I've unfortunately had to have two surgeries this summer. The first was to be a simple orthoscopic removal of bone that was floating behind my knee. It turned into major surgery. My Lyme symptoms got worse for a while. The second one was the removal of my gallbladder which was done laproscopically. My LLMD had the surgeon put vancomycin in the IV during my gallbladder surgery. This seems to have helped as my symptoms haven't really gotten worse this time.
