Following up to my post "two steps back" from a few days ago here: https://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=30&m=3913237
I'm trying to decide whether to stick with my LLMD and get tested by IGeneX to guide a new course of treatment, or switch to Dr. J's clinic in D.C. Would appreciate any input.
Brief history:
I was diagnosed in May, had a standard course of doxy with a regular doctor, then found a LLMD who put me on doxy 300 mg / day for about
5 weeks, plus vitamins and supplements. I went off the doxy myself at the end of July due to yeast, and then my LLMD thought I didn't need it anymore so we focused on the supplements and added more herbs (Japanese knotweed plus, with cat's claw and a few others). I delayed getting the new herb mix for a week and then had trouble finding it, so haven't started that yet, but have been taking the other supplements (listed below).
After stopping the doxy, my symptoms started coming back. After a few weeks, I started messaging my LLMD, who told me to monitor symptoms until the next appointment (two months after the last one and still more than a month away at that point). I started developing more new symptoms including neurological ones, panicked, and went in on Tuesday and asked to go back on the doxy. She thinks the problem is more a coinfection but isn't sure which one, and wants me to get tested through IGeneX in order to choose the best treatment, but she agreed to start with doxy in the meantime.
I really like my LLMD (she is caring and seems pretty knowledgeable) but during that time I was getting such a "wait and see" response, I started thinking of switching doctors. I'm probably about
an hour and a half from Dr. J's clinic in D.C.
I want to decide before going ahead with the IGeneX test, because I've read that Dr. J doesn't test for those -- he treats on the assumption that you have multiple coinfections (please correct me if I'm wrong here). So I don't want to spend a lot of money on the test and then spend a lot again on the switch to the clinic if the test won't affect the treatment.
Pros of switching: Aggressive treatment with a top expert. The neuro symptoms and the fast descent in the past week scared the heck out of me.
Cons of switching: Expense, distance, and I'm also a little scared of the aggressive treatment and of being one of thousands of patients.
One complicating factor -- I'm allergic to several antibiotics.
Any thoughts? What would you do?
