Rifampin- herx? Or worsening infections?

Hi all. I am SO SICK OF THIS!!! As I know you all are, too. What a nightmare this is.

Anyways, I started rifampin one week ago. It was added to 100mg doxy BID. I have been slowly titrating up the dose over the past week. Today I took 450mg once a day. My target dose is 600mg once a day and I hope to get there by Thursday.

Yesterday was my third day at 300mg once a day. Mid day high-is fever. Utter exhaustion. Had to lay in bed all afternoon on a gorgeous sunny day while my kids were out playing SO NOT ME!!! Zero appetite, weird pain in my hip joint, increased sensitivity to light. I actually am beginning to wonder if this is what a slow death feels like.

I am trying to understand if this is a good and welcomed sign as the dreaded "rifampin herx" I've read about? Or is this my infections taking over my body and not being impacted at all by the medications?

I wish someone had a crystal ball and could tell me (and all of us) the outcome of this mess. I honestly feel like I am NEVER going to get better.

If the consensus is that this is a herx, I will try to feel good about feeling like crap. Thanks Lyme friends!

My wager is on herx. The timing and new med is generally the culprit of a herx.

So you know I am going to say this - detox a little more. You might want to hold at the current dosage and not go up until you feel a little stronger. There is no rush in getting to the max dose.

Evanston - You are herxing .... be kind to yourself today...take it easy...and do what you can to flush out those toxins.

Evanston there are many ups and downs through all of this for many of us.

I can tell you that I have felt the same way you do at times...at times the answers to why we are feeling or reacting to the many components of these infections can seem unending and certainly mind baffling.

Don't let these infections have all the control ...you are treating, detoxing, trying to do every thing you can and live life in the midst of all of this uncertainty.

What we do know is others have come before us here, they have gotten better. They have been kind enough to stay along for our ride or there are others still fighting to get better and they all share their knowledge and support.

When your uncertain , frustrated, desperate, angry or sad come here and lean on all of us.

We will all get through this together , I believe there is hope and a better day ahead for all of us.

Enjoy your children let the joy of their laughter and there smiles bring you comfort and hope while you fight this battle.

rifampin and doxy is a double potent killing machine. it kills all sorts of stuff you probably have and don't even know it cause they can only test for so little of the pathogens out there. fortunately these meds are akin to napalm they are broad spectrum killers so yes sure sounds like you are herxing. up the detox, rest and plow ahead. if its too much back off for a bit and get back to something more tolerable.
