My LLMD is recommending IV abx. However, not sure I can swing it financially without giving up my house. She stated that Omnicef is most likely the closest you can get to an IV abx.

What are your experiences with it?

Hoagie, I was prescribed Omnicef and Azithromycin as my first course of treatment (after I couldn't tolerate Doxy). In 6 weeks, I saw improvement, but ultimately hit a wall with that combo as I was facing emerging Babesia and Bartonella infections.

Interestingly, I tried Ceftin -- an older cephalosporin -- over the summer and didn't find it as effective for me. The IV version of Ceftin is cefuroxime.

Dr. H. states that some people will react to one cephalosporin and not others. So, I think, as with other medications, it's trial and error.

Hi Hoagie. I've been on omnicef for 7 months now. I was on it with zithromax for a few months. I saw great improvement with my lyme from the omnicef. My llmd had me pretty much symptom free besides the pesky bartonella. So now I'm treating with omnicef and rifampin for that. I'd definitely recommend it if i.v is not an option for you.

Thank you for the replies. I think I will feel out the oral route for a month and if that doesn't fare well, I will see what I can do to get the IV.

Hey Hoagie we never hooked up down in D.C. Wondering if I passed you somewhere in that place LOL.

Omnicef is THE drug that Dr. J typically prescribes for the protocol as its a late generation cephalosporin and has lots of action against Lyme. If you haven't tried it before definitely give it a whirl.

What else did they say?

It was a full 3 hour event. I was a bit jumbled at first talking to the PA. My timeline was all over the place. I could tell it was frustrating her. But she was great. She told me to slow down, we had plenty of time. It was funny.

When Dr J came in. He went over my brain MRI and askdd a few questions. My main concerns are my motor function issues. I told him I had listened to a phone interview he gave to someone overseas earlier this year where some motor neuron patients are untreatable.

His first respose was, "That was a long ass interview." All 3 of us started laughing and it lightned the mood in the room. He gave me a shortened version of the exam the PA gave me earlier. He tested my strength and was happy with everything except I do have some weakness in my feet. He was happy as he didn't notice any muscle wasting. But he did say there looked to be some lower motor neuron involvement and recommended aggressive IV therapy.

Got to see if I can get some funding for it.

Sorry for hijacking your thread but is it possible to combine I.V. rocephine 2g (3rd generation cephalosporin) with rifampicin? Possibly I.V. rifampicin?
And would that be just as effective for treating Lyme + bartonella as azithromycin + rifampicin?

I haven't actually heard of IV Rifampin being used.

Rocephin and Clindamycin are the ones I've seen mentioned.

What about doing IV Rocephin plus oral Rifampin or Rifabutin?

I did that for a short time

2/21/12 to 2/26/12: Zithromax, IV Rocephin (2x/4 days/wk, 3 days off pulse), Actigall, Rifampin
1/17/12 to 2/20/12: Zithromax, IV Rocephin (1x/day), Actigall, Rifampin

Then had return of Babs sx and dropped Rifampin for Mepron.

In hindsight I later figured out that most of the spontaneous bruising and vessel ruptures were more from Bart than Babs.

A lot of folks coming off IV Rocephein do frequently switch to Omnicef because they are so similar.

I had a hard time with omnicef. It made my joints hurt - hands, knees, feet and also increased rib pain along with the usual insomnia. Did not let up so I went off and joint pain went away.

you don't think that it was symptoms of the infection(s)?

It was constant for months. Seems strange that it would instantly go away once off. Who knows. I feel TONS better off antibiotics. Just not worth it for me. I think with biotoxin illness you just continue to be worse on abx unless you can mop up toxins. Maybe if I’d been on cholestyramine it would have been a different story. Welchol did nothing.
