Hello all,

I developed Lyme symptoms in early July, and was on 2 weeks doxy, off 1 and a half months, back on doxy for 4 weeks. Finally I was diagnosed with Lyme in late October, specifically TBRF, Babesia Duncani and Babesia Microti, and put on a month of antibiotics- nystatin 2tabs 3x a day, azithromycin 500mg 1 a day, tindamax 500 2xper day, and ceftin 500 2x/day.

I was able to see a LLMD who first prescribed me those antibiotics, and has now prescribed- nystatin, malarone, bactrim, and flagyl. Today was my first day on these new antibiotics and I ended up vomiting all of them out of my sytem. Unfortunately I do not have enough money to regularly consult with a LLMD, and am looking for advice on treatment. Are any of these current antibiotics more likely to have caused the vomiting?
Any suggestions on how to go forward with treatment?
Also, does anyone know a LLMD in the UK who treats either on public healthcare (NHS) or BUPA medical insurance?

other questions: does taking activated charcoal with abx nullify the effects of abx? if herxing is the dying of lyme bacteria, is herxing good? i've been taking very hot baths, and herxing quite hard after, is this good?

I have gotten quite depressed reading many stories of debilitating lyme, have had to quit my job, return to live with my parents, rarely leave the house and cannot engage in all the things i loved (exercise and sports, reading, partying, hanging out with friends) and find I am not a pleasant person to be around and am dragging on my family. Does anyone have any success stories for lyme? would love to hear them, hear timelines of healing or not.

Hi Kyle.

I'm so sorry you are doing through this. NOT FUN!! My best recommendation is to start one pill at a time. Had I started all the meds you listed at one time, I for sure would have vomited too. Your body needs time to adjust to each medication. Flagyl can be very hard on your body. And for some, Bactrim can be a very heavy hitter, too. So choose one, start at a lower dose for a couple of days and then work your way up to the full dose. And once you are sure you are tolerating it, then add the next one. And you do that with each one until you are at the target dose of all three. Please be sure to take a very strong probiotic or multiple probiotics. With all those medications, your gut will be challenged so give your stomach all the help you can.

As far as how long it will take.... every body is different. It totally depends on how long you've been sick, the status of your immune system, how quickly you caught the infections and started treating, how many infections you have, how your body detoxes, if you have other issues like mold and heavy metals, etc.

When I first got sick, the doctor told me to expect to treat for 1-3 years. I know that is so depressing and it's also a wife time frame. I can tell you that both me and my 11 year old daughter are 16 months in and we are leaving next month for whole body hyperthermia treatments in Germany. We've been on antibiotics mostly the whole time. I am totally functional, still working full time. She is much worse than I am.

You WILL get through this. I promise. There will be lots of ups and downs. Your circle of friends might get smaller. And that's ok. The true blue friends will be by your side no matter what. And this forum has an incredible group of people that will be here for you.

Good luck and take it slow. Slow is the name of the game with Lyme. Slow and steady will get you better.

Hey Evanston,

thank you very much for the medical advice, and especially the experiential advice. Its great to hear that even though you are sick, you are able to function in some way.

Regarding probiotics, are the benefits of probiotics counteracted by taking antibiotics at the same time?

Hi and welcome to our forum Kyleds8,

Activated charcoal has to be taken at least two hours away from taking any medications/herbals/food/probiotics so that it does not bind them too.

Drink plenty of water when taking AVC.


When taking ABX , make sure to drink plenty of water also with the pill, do not lay down right away, and sometimes you need to eat something before hand.

This may help with the vomiting problem.


Probiotics are very important, they also need to be taken a few hours after the Abx or some people take them at bedtime.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with all of this, it is difficult but members here do understand what you are going through and are here to offer support when needed.

You asked about activated charcoal. It's a binder which means it binds the toxins and helps pull them out of your system after they've died off due to treatment. Using a binder can help you feel better. You need to take the activated charcoal away from everything else which is hard to do. I found that taking it when I woke up in the middle of the night to pee worked great for me.

Hot baths-don't take them. The really hot water is stirring up the critters and making you feel lousy. Don't do that to yourself. Treating is hard enough as it is so don't do anything else that will make you feel worse.

Make sure to push fluids. You are treating which means you are killing pathogens. You want to help your body flush those out as they are toxic.

I've been treating for 3 1/2 years. Doing much much better. I'm not working but I could go back now.

Hi Kyleds.

Welcome to our community.

As jrpsf said - don't take hot baths for detox. Take warm baths...as you want to feel better with the bath.
I use the epsom salt baths to relieve my symptoms.
it's one of my favorite detox methods.

i have not had nausea until I started treating Babesia...it would come and go when I was on Mepron and then on Malarone.
Worse with the mepron though.
