I haven't done it yet, so I can't tell you exactly how it works yet. But I should be set to test it within the next week or so.

My doctor had me do an ERMI test through Mycometrics lab. Cost is $300 total. The ERMI is what Shoemaker and the docs who use the Shoemaker protocol use. I've done 4 ERMI tests on 4 buildings now. Compared to air sample testing, ERMI is far superior to understanding what you're being exposed to and the resultant health effects. If you're thinking about testing for mold and have the money, I would go straight for the ERMI through Mycometrics. I've heard other labs have not been reliable. You will need to call the lab when you get the results and ask for guidance interpreting the values. It would be very helpful if they supplied a reference range, but they don't.

I personally wouldn't consider the kits you buy at the store. I wouldn't want to do that and have false reassurance based on inadequate testing. Mold is serious business. If you're being exposed, you really need to know what you're dealing with IMO.

I've used ERMI three times and HERTSMI twice from Mycometrics. In my opinion, they are very accurate. We were about to purchase a home and I did the ERMI on main floor and HERTSMI in basement. HERTSMI is cheaper (only gives results for 5 mold species but they are the bad ones) and we couldn't afford to ERMI's. The HERTSMI picked up very high aspergillus from mold on a beverage fridge. I've tested our previous and current homes using ERMI and just last week sent results back for HERTSMI on our lake cottage.
