Has anyone here had mono as an adult? I am 46 years old, woke up Sunday morning with a low grade fever and sore throat/lymph nodes. Tested negative for strep twice so now they are running blood tests to see if I might have mono. Today I woke up with a cough now too and it hurts when I cough.

I am very conscious of the fact that I am having trouble swallowing and it's giving me anxiety. I was hoping for strep and that abx would just get rid of it. Of course was also worried abx would stir up the lyme buggers but this is just a miserable feeling...anyone else had this as an adult?

Lyme can reactivate dormant viruses, one of them being EBV (mono). My EBV titers were off the charts. I believe that when I cure my co's, that it will go away.... well that's what I have gathered from other people. My throat looks terrible and has for 2 years now.

My dad had mono as an adult... But I've never heard of anyone getting a cough with mono. Could you just have some kind of nasty cold? I don't know what would cause trouble swallowing. Is your throat too swollen? That can happen sometimes when you are sick. Also could it be a bartonella flare?

Oh dear, that's terrible! Mine is so bad I have trouble swallowing. I am hoping it's not mono and just a virus that passes but I am wondering if it got reactivated by the Lyme. I feel terrible.

Yes, mono can be reactivated...and definitely lyme can cause that.

So my blood tests came back and do not indicate mono so that's good news! I have white spots on the back of my throat so now I am on 500 mg amoxicillin 3x/day for 10 days. I am a little worried that the amoxicillin is going to stir up the Lyme bacteria though and will feel even worse. I know doxy does for sure but I have never been on amoxicillin since I have had Lyme. Should I expect some herxing and take some modified citrus pectin or activated charcoal before bed?

Sure sounds like strep to me.

I have a long rocky history with the cursed strep. I know in general the testing is talked about as being 99% sensitive. That has not been the case for me. I have had strep 3 times where the rapid test in the doctor's office was negative and the culture would end up being positive. I was also treated one time with negative tests on symptoms.

There are several strains of strep A, B and C I think. Probably many more. I do not believe the tests can be 100% trusted.

For me/ IMO- throat so sore you cannot eat + fever + signature white spots on throat = strep whether the tests are neg or not.

well hopefully this amoxicillin kicks in soon as I am on day 5 now. I know both times they swabbed my throat I didn't even gag because they barely got in there. They did not swab the back which is where my white spots are so I don't think they even did an accurate swab at all.

I do have a cough too now though so hoping that doesn't mean it's viral. I would think if it was viral I should be feeling a little better by now though.

I just took second dose and it doesn't seem to be stirring up my lyme yet so that's good. I hope by tonight I start improving but I know it could still take a couple of days since I only just started the abx.

I don't think they actually ran a true mono test either, just checked my WBC which she said came within the normal range. Fingers crossed it's strep and this amoxicillin knocks it out!
