(No Subject)

So the other day I took my dog to the vet because she wasn't acting like herself for the past few weeks...maybe a week and a half.

Vet didn't find anything wrong.

Last night, i spot a bulls eye rash on her belly. Distinct bulls eye. Today, I call the vet and send a picture. They don't want to see her. They say it isn't ringworm. They also say that my concerns of a tick bite are unfounded that dogs don't get a bulls eye rash. They claim she must have been bit by an ant or a spider or something other than a tick.

So they will give her an ointment to use and see if that clears it up.

I call bs on the fact that tick won't cause a rash in a dog but another insect would. I demand they take precautions and prescribe an antibiotic. They say ok, but I only got 2 weeks worth. I am not sure what they prescribed because I have to pick it up this morning and haven't gotten there yet.

What are your opinions? I feel like the statement that dogs don't get a bulls eye isn't right and doesn't make sense...I got lucky to see a rash in all her fur as it is on her belly. Can't most lyme rashes be missed in dogs fur?

On a side note...On easter sunday my grown son was working in the yard for us and came in an immediately took a shower, but the next day found an imbedded tick on his calf. I gave him 30 days of doxy that an llmd gave me to use if anyone in my family got bit. I was given two rounds of 30 days. So since I gave him 30 days I hae 30 days left over.

I have already decided to give her an antibiotic but my question to you all is do I extend the antibiotic another two weeks on top of the 2 weeks the vet prescribed??

Also I welcome your opinions and comments on likelihood of dogs getting a bulls eye rash from a tick bite.

I really value your opinion.

I am fortunate that my first llmd felt very strongly that anyone with a tick bite should treat for 30 days and not to wait for symptoms. So when he prescribed me doxy he said he was always giving me more than I would need to stock pile for family members who may get bit. (We live in a high tick area in southeast pennsylvania. )

As for my dog I hope this does the trick...I mean 30 days doxy. The vet gave us 2 weeks of 200 mg 2 times a day. I think the dose is sufficient but not the duration.

What miffs me is that I had her in the vet this past week saying she was acting out of sorts. They wanted to do a lyme test on her and they did and it came back negative (they said it is 100 percent reliable) but I don't buy that now that she got a bulls eye rash. I think she was showing signs of lyme and then got the rash. The vet said the symptoms in a dog are only lame legs and fever. But I pointed out to her that there are too many symptoms I get that cannot be seen by anyone and only felt by me...so why wouldn't it be the same for a dog. I mean she can't tell me if she is tingly anywhere or if her vision goes blurry or if she feels confused or pressure in her head. So there, are i am sure, invisible symptoms in our dogs too. I noticed her personality acting off. i am very in tune with my fur baby so I pick up on stuff quick. Dont mess with my dog and give my her antibiotics. hahahah

Yes I have 30 more days worth of doxy so I can give her 2 weeks of it plus the two weeks prescribed to her. She weighs 52 pounds. Yeah she was given the same dosage as I was. Do you think that is too much?
