I took some notes and put together a list of items that stood out to me in Stephen Buhner's book Healing Lyme Disease Coinfections Bartonella & Mycoplasma.
Here they are:
- The impact of multiple coinfections is not additive, they are synergistic. They create effects greater than the sum of the parts.
- In the immune competent, neither bacteria will create this severe an impact.
- The most important thing in treating coinfections is to reduce the inflammatory processes the bacteria initiate, by counteracting the cytokine cascade they initiate. This stops pretty much all the symptoms right there especially if treatment protocols are also begun that are designed to protect the areas of the body that are effected.
- The bacteria can’t survive if they are not able to initiate their particular form of inflammation in the body; it is how they make habitat and scavenge food.
- The additional protocols to reduce acute symptoms and help restore quality of life are also very important.
- Antibacterials can be helpful but comprehensive treatment protocols must be more complex than simply monotherapeutic approach. Relying on “kill the invaders” is becoming increasingly ineffective.
- Mycoplasmas are thought to primarily infect the respiratory tract and it is true that they have a predisposition for that location but it is becoming increasingly clear that systemic infections are much more common than formerly thought. Mycoplasmas can infect any organ of the body.
- Mycoplasmas have an affinity for the cilia containing areas of the brain and CNS as well as blood vessels in the brain.
- Mycoplasma protocol – turn the physiological condition around, make the environment unpleasant enough that the population significantly drops.
- All the tinctures can be combined with water or juice – pomegranate juice recommended. And yes they can all be taken together.
- Correcting takes time. It can be reversed. Expect a minimum of a year, two years if condition is serious.
- Mycoplasmas especially M. pneumoniae are associated with increased levels of ALT. In fact, in the absence of liver disease and if ALT levels are rising it is crucial to look for mycoplasma.
- Bartonella impacts the CNS and is often more severe than Lyme.
- Although there is a lot of concern in the Lyme community about biofilms, there should not be. When they form, bacteria are protected around a shield and if it breaks up open they spread throughout the body often in the bloodstream. Sida acuta and NAC help break biofilms if you wish to use them.
- Bartonella healing can take 4 to 12 months.
- Bartonella core protocol is designed around reducing the cytokine cascade, protecting and normalizing the endothelial lining of the blood vessels, spleen, liver, lymph, and immune system. Please understand if you do these things, the organisms cannot continue to survive in the body.
- The use of antibacterials is not essential. However, one of the herbs Sida acuta is a very potent systemic antibacterial. Nevertheless, the most effective approach for recalcitrant bartonella is not antibacterial.
- As you can see, cordyceps, knotweed, EGCG, Chinese skullcap, and pomegranate are all hitting multiple areas that have been found with bartonella infection. Inhibiting these will in most instances stop the majority of symptoms.
- If you had to treat Lyme and its coinfections and most resistant bacteria solely with this invasive plants: Japanese knotweed, kudzu, isatis, houttuynina, greater celandine, eleutherococcus spinosus, bidens, phellodendron, sida, ailanthus.
