Antibiotic Combinations for Lyme & Babesia

Research by Zhang et al., seems to indicate a good combination for eradicating spirochetes and persister cells as well as dissolving biofilms (at least in vitro) is:

Doxycycline
Cefuroxime (Ceftin)
Oil of Oregano

If one had Babesia as well, I’m wondering if it would be too much to add azithromycin (Zithromax) and atovaquone (Mepron) to this regimen.

Or would it be better to treat them sequentially (one after the other)?

Both doxycycline and azithromycin are bacteriostatic drugs. Cefuroxine is bacteriocidal and kills growing bacteria, while the others inhibit bacterial growth.

Wondering if adding another bacteriostatic drug (adding azithromycin to the doxycycline) would have a negative effect on treating the Lyme?

My doctor wanted me on minocycline (similar to doxy), Ceftin and Mepron for Lyme plus babesia. (I'm allergic to Ceftin so they subbed something else.) I was on azithromycin before this and they took me off of it when adding the Mepron, so in their view, apparently those are too much altogether.

Mepron alone isn't enough...but you're going to take doxy, right?

For Babs, I take Mepron, mino and Ceftin one week, and Mepron, Ceftin and bactrim for one week.

I'm taking Clindamycin in place of the Ceftin. They really wanted me on the Ceftin though. Also taking artemisinin, which hits babesia as well.

at one time i took Ceftin/Doxy/Plaquenil/Oil of Organo/Monolaurin. then swapped out the Doxy for Minocyline. I take the Designs for Health oil of Oregano, claimed 60-75% carvocrol.

I am curious if there is any supporting studies on the effectiveness of Oil of Oregano or monolaurin on coinfections babesia and bartonella. i haven't found much.

Liposomal artemisinin (2 caps twice a day) made me Herx every time on around Day #4 of my pulse of 4 days on, 3 days off.

Are you pulsing the artemsinin? How much are you taking?

Yes, currently 800 mg twice a day, three days a week, a few weeks a month.

Mepron alone isn't enough...but you're going to take doxy, right?

Doxy alone isn't effective (nor is ceftin, mino, azithromycin...etc) ...but paired with Mepron or Malarone...it's an option.

That's my dosage as well. smile

How do you find that, Dahlias? I find the protocol quite 'heavy' - not sure if it's the Artemisinin...or the 2 tsp of Mepron twice daily....or the combination.

I've been taking both of those for 5 or 6 months now. At first, it just about knocked me flat, but now it's much easier. Guess my body got used to the meds plus there's less to kill.

For awhile I forgot my art pills were only 100 mg each, so I was taking half the dose I was supposed to take -- oops. But I'm at 800 mg this round and it's fine.

Never heard of Liposomal Artemisinin. I'm taking the one from Nutricology. (Currently the Super version so I don't have to take eight at a time.)
