Hi guys.

My girlfriend switched from biaxin to zithromax because she was concerned about heart...but her heart symptoms doesn't improve and she doesn't want to take more macrolides... I said her to hang in there, but she's afraid and want to take other abx.. Her llmd said bactrim is a good chooise, so she would take mino/rifampin/bactrim...

Excepto steven jhonson syndrome.... There are other potentiall side effects? I know hiperkalemia is a problem with bactrim and can cause heart problems... but i don't known if it's common...

Her llmd said that it's two abx in one and prevent resistance to bart because both hitt bart .. Is it true?

Mino/Bactrim/Rifampin is a serious protocol for bart.


I was on ceftin/bactrim and Mepron and it was difficult. It was prescribed to be taken one week of my cycle.

Either my first or second cycle (can't remember), I got some weird skin things...not a rash really...but isolated spots - that almost looked like blisters...they had a center to them.
I sent a photo to the nursing triage at the clinic I'm being treated at..and they said it didn't 'look like' a Stevens Johnson rash and to resume taking it.

So, I did.

Then a couple months later...on the the bactrim week, I got a spot on my skin (clavicle area) plus a blister on the inside of my lip.
I googled stevens johnson syndrome ( you'll have nightmares if you do this) and it said if you get any type of skin reaction to STOP it.

So I did...and called the clinic and they agreed I should stop it.

There's a guy Brian Deer - a reporter in England...who has a website about the harms of Bactrim.

Thing is - it seems to be very effective for treating lyme and coinfections.

I wouldn't worry about resistance - as she's also on rifampin.
AND...bart replicates fairly slowly (several days) - so that is also good when it comes to resistance.

Oh my good .... If i read brian deber page it's evento worst than levaquin.... ***!!! A lot of people with systemic symptoms... permanente damage is it real?

Now you're going to have nightmares by looking up SJS - you can't unsee it ....lol

I would assume it's real. (the Brian Deer site)

But, there are many, many people including forum members who take it with no issues whatsoever.


bluelyme posted he had a bad reaction...but I can't remember anyone else on here reporting one.


I'm somewhat of a chicken...when I got the strange spots -both had a center to them...which didn't look like any rash I've had since lyme (I've had several)....these were more like blisters.

And, the one on my shin...was about 4 months ago...and theres still a strange mark there...a scar I guess...which is strange.

** My husband was asking me everyday to see it and see if it was going away....even he was worried...lol.

I was on bactrim ds for quite some time and I never had any crazy side effects. I wasn't aware that it was a possibility, but looking back it was probably for the best that I didn't know. I had an awful resistant lung infection that was responsive to bactrim so it was sort of life or death in my case. OMG, I just looked up SJS. Huge mistake.

Jajajaja she doesn't know about sjs, but i know sad

She thinks it's safer than macrolides.. . i don't know what to say her now jajaja

There are other meds that can cause SJS as well....but nevermind...I'm not going to mention them...

OriolCarol - Just make sure that if there is a skin reaction...that she stops right away. I think in many cases people don't realize it can be serious and continue to take it.

I listened to the Practitioner the first time...but the second time when I read that ANY type of skin reaction, you should stop it...I was going to - no matter what the Practitioner said...but she did agree to stop.

It's like levaquin with tendon pain really? Difficult to knownif it's herx or side effect... But i've read that incidence of sjs is 0,9 with bactrim... I don't know if it's true

I've se en an article of horowitz and mycobacterium drugs. He uses pyrazinamide to treat bart with mino and rifpin... Maybe it's a safer option than bactrim? Her llmd doesn't know anything about this drug and say that it has no effect on bart....

I don't find any article about pyrazinamide and bartonella... This drug is intracellullar and has very good cns penetration and brain o:

Well that maybe is the exception - it’s pretty distinct.

Yup - that’s the problem with Levaquin and Cipro - I had tendinopathy in my right shoulder during bart treatment - if I had been taking the Cipro or Levaquin I would not have known what to do.

Incidence of sjs from just bactrim is .9 %? (Decimal 9?) so that is almost one in a hundred??
That’s higher than I would have thought.
Or did I misinterpret?

Yes, it's the problem with levaquin and cipro. I would like to take it Jajajaja but never can...

0,9 for 1000 Girlie, sorry... My mistake, it's less than 1/1000 persons.

There’s also the other ones - Dapsone and Daraprim - not sure if it’s just for Lyme persisters or also Bart - I think we really don’t know for sure what we have most times.

Dr J is using them both now

And i think girlie that microbiologist have never tested this drugs in vitro against bartonella. It would be easy but the don't do that or at least there is no study in internet Jajajaja

But they are similar to rifampin and rifabutin, intracellullar etc... I think they work for bart

I've talked to her and she wants to take bactrim.... This llmd prescribe higher doses... (I taked once 400mg of mino because i was desperated and it was a big mistake, i didn't know what i was doing jajaj...)

Her treatment would be

Bactrim DS 3 pills per day, minocycline 100mg 2 x day and 600 mg of a rifampin....

She is little O_O and weight only 60 kilos... Isn't it to much?

well, I think testing in vitro is over-rated anyway.

Dr. j is still using those drugs...if he doesn't see results, I'm sure he'd stop prescribing...time will tell.

hmmm...3 per day?
Dr. J prescribes Bactrim DS 2 per day and he's not shy with the abx.

Is the rifampin 600 once, or 300 twice?

***PLEASE READ***

Several years prior to me realizing I was 'sick' I was on bactrim a few times for a UTI. Everytime I went on bactrim I had a horrible reaction. I now know that was a herx. Maybe this is partially what kept my lyme at bay for so long? Could be. Long story short, that was the last antibiotic that my doctor had me on and I had NO reaction to it after treatment.

I did have the bart rashes pop up on bactrim. It only lasted for a day, I remember thinking wtf is that though...ahhh those were the days before I knew about all this stuff!!

I believe everyone should be cautious about what they put in their body but sometimes you can overthink things. Take note of what the side effects are, be cautious, and stay in touch with your doctors.

Also I weigh 107 lbs...when I had lyme I averaged 90 lbs. smile I don't remember my dosage but they were standard with a 150 lber.

I'm just a little heavier than your girlfriend...and I was prescribed the same amount as a man who is 180 lbs.

For adults, they don't seem to be concerned about weight.

Just remember - these side effects/risks are few and far between.

I would have continued on the bactrim if I hadn't got the second reaction....

it calms me to hear this jajajaj

I thought she was going to explode with these doses.

Bactrim also attacks babesia, right? I do not think She have it, but if she had it, it would also be covered.

I will inspect her with a magnifying glass every day hahaha

She does not know about sj syndrome, but I will have it controlled and if i see something wrong we will stop it!

Well, the bactrim - 3 pills is something I personally haven't seen before..but the mino and riffy are the same doses we see all the time.

I have often wondered why they adult dosing isn't by weight, the way it is for children.
Heck when I first started treatment I was 124 lbs taking the same amount as a 200 lb man...seems odd to me.

Bactrim does have some 'action' against Babesia, but usually an antimalarial/anti-parasistic is needed - like Mepron, or Malarone...or clindamycin...

Mine looks like it was just one pill a day. it said 800/160, but that may have been my ending treatment when I was out of the hospital and getting close to stopping.

I am 115 lb.

I am really scared of that SJS thing.
What other meds?

The bactrim that she's being prescribed is Double strenght. Is it more potent?
