How common is it here to be put on Cortef? What's the general consensus on its usefulness and safety?

I got a call after a blood test saying that my PA is calling that in for me. I left a message asking why, but I guess it's because my cortisol levels are on the very low end of normal. I guess that's supposed to be from stressed adrenals?

I understand that this can help with energy, which would be nice. I've also read that some people have stopped making cortisol naturally and had a hard time getting off if it. Anyone use a more natural method for addressing this?

While steroids are contrandicated with these infection - low doses of cortisone is sometimes necessary and shouldn't cause the immune suppression like the higher doses used for autoimmune diseases. (and the dose you were previously on for your allergic/anaphylactic reaction)


Is it something like 5 mg?

Dhalias - did you just recently have a cortisol test...or are they finally looking at the lab work that was requested at the initial consult?


The low dosage shouldn't stop your body from producing cortisol...but higher doses are hard to get off of.
Even with a low dose...I think i'd still wean off it...just to be on the safe side.

It's 10 mg, and it's based off a recent test.

Could that have anything to do with the swollen lymph nodes? This is part of a test she ordered after she noticed that. TSH, T3, T4 etc. were fine.

I was surprised to have low cortisol, given that I still wake up in a panic some nights. I really don't understand all this stuff at all.

Sorry for all the questions...but.... what prompted a recent test? fatigue?


Interesting - I had a lot of panicky wake ups early on...and I thought that was a cortisol surge - but maybe that is what happens when we are low? we get surges?

Interesting - I wonder what the link is with swollen lymph nodes.

Are you taking it in divided doses - 5 mg twice ?

Certainly won’t hury to try the Cortef. I think it’s something you’ll know right away if it’s helping.

Let us know how you feel - and if it helps with your panic attacks during the night.
