I’m curious to know if there’s a specific co-infection or Lyme that triggers caffeine to make symptoms worse. Before I tell symptoms and the back story I’m curious on people’s take, if they’ve had reactions with caffeine, and what they have.

After 5 years I’m still unsure what it is, but I know it’s Lyme, babs, or Bart. I’m confirmed two of them, but I think the confirmed two are from a previous tick bite I was lucky enough to get treated with 3 weeks of doxycycline and no symptoms for 10 years after until I pulled a tick off me 5 years ago. Then it went goodbye Sally quick!

I got sick back in December after never having any history of sickness prior my entire 28 years of life being very healthy and active, an avid gym-goer, etc. Then, I suddenly got very sick with something while overseas and things have never been the same...I did happen to make a short-lived somewhat of a recovery back in march (about 80%) enough to barely go back to work but that only lasted a week and a half...and I ended up at the ER. Funny, what triggered the onset of the return of my symptoms and got me much worse is a couple of hours after I drank a cup of coffee with high caffeine content for the first time in over a year and a half... at the time since everything came back negative in the ER they thought I had overdosed on caffeine.. now I take it as a trigger to my bartonella/yers/babs which I didn't have any clue about at the time (as I would eventually be diagnosed with lyme in may when I was extremely ill, practically bedridden).

Needless to say, I stay clear of anything even with trace amounts of caffeine as I believe it does trigger something.

1)Caffeine itself can create a cytokine reaction and up-regulate T and B cell response - which can be good or bad.

2)It can stimulate / aggravate adrenals - pretty much a bad thing unless your running for your life.

So, since the last tick bite...did you go back to your LLMD and get treatment?

It's super common for people with these illnesses to have sensitivity to caffeine. If your adrenal function is low, your adrenaline is likely high to counter the cortisol then when you drink caffeine it just pumps the adrenaline even higher. That's how you get the wired and tired feeling plus any other weird symptoms that may come along with it

I had undiagnozed adrenal issue for years and my go-to coping mechanism was caffeine. Thee days with lyme and a lot more allergies I know I cant have caffeine not just because it isnt good for the adrenals but because I am now allergic to it. It makes me feel quite ill and its just not worth it.

Does anyone still drink coffee? I started again (after 5 years) only 1/2 cup/1 a day, one of my few remaining pleasures in life.
