Hello,

Just received test back for my daughter. Trying to understand what the results mean and treatment. Tested positive on 6 bands.

Band 18 - 060
Band 23 - 050
Band 30 - 040
Band 39 - 033
Band 41 - 053
band 93 - 056

If I am reading correctly the CDC will say she does not have lyme.

She was bit by a tic 10 years ago and had the rash. Now has autoimmune issues and mental health issues also with headaches and joint pain.

Not sure where to start looking for help.

Hi Karen - welcome!

A tick bite plus the EM rash is diagnostic of lyme disease. If she didn't get effective treatment at the time...then she still has LD and does need treatment.

Band 23,39,93 are lyme 'specific' bands.

I'm not sure what those other numbers are besides the bands...
What you want to do now is find a Lyme Literate Dr. to treat your daughter.

I would venture a guess that those numbers are band intensity. I have seen some test results that show band intensity.

I wish all tests showed intensity. You might have a band at 39 and the cutoff if 40 and it gets reported negative...

not really sure what the intensity cut off is these days. I think I read some scientific published squabbles over it and I think they were arguing between 40 and 70.

I guess that is the same just different system perhaps?

Yeah I think it is their way of standardizing the intensity.

the stuff you read about band intensity talks about optical units:

"The presence of at least 2 bands of moderate to high intensity (> 40 optical units) or at least 5 bands of lower intensity (> 20 optical units)"

I bet that is what is on Jake's test, but you don't see that from very many labs. I think the difficulty in measuring band intensity is taking the analog strip test result and trying to translate it into either a binary positive/negative or an IND, +, ++, +++. I think some labs just have the lab tech eyeball it and some labs use optical recognition software to evaluate. I would suspect the bigger labs processing thousands of tests every week use the optical recognition software.

Jake- I am not sure what the intensity cutoff is for each band, but if you are indeed IgG positive on 6 bands, then the CDC will say you meet the surveillance criteria for a positive test result.

Most doctors would then say you do have Lyme, although there are those out there that might say your result is from a past infection that your body has already cleared. The test does not say whether or not one has a current infection. It only indicates exposure to a Borrelia that stimulates those particular antibodies.

If you have symptoms that fit the bill plus those test results you should probably want to seek treatment ASAP.

CDC/NYS Criteria:
Positive: If 5 of the following 10 bands are present: 18, 23, 28, 30, 39, and 41, 45, 58, 66 and 93kDa.
