I'm taking rifampin alone for 5 days. 900 mg (450 twice daily). I need to pair it with other abx. I don't want to take bactrim DS, because sulfa drug but i could get trimethoprim alone, maybe it's enough to preventiva rifampin resistance. What do you think? 900 mg rifampin and 320 mg trimethoprim.

I think that bad effects of bactrim are mainly sulfa really? I know trimethoprim can cause hyperkalemia but i think it's safe.

I'm taking hawthorne tincture and arginnine to prote endothellial cells.

Are you allergic to sulfa? You know onions and garlic is sulfur drugs too so if you can eat that you can probably take sulfa drugs ok do not let side effects scare you to not take, bactrim is extremely safe unless u allergic to sulfa drugs and take folic acid too

Bactrim was the one I had a reaction to.
Within a couple days of taking it, some “lesions” developed on my skin.
I stopped it.

Then restarted it a few weeks later - and several days later I got the lesions again so I stopped it and haven’t taken it again.

I’ve had many rashes during treatment that I just pushed through but these lesions were concerning me - they were round lesions - one on my chest area and one on my lower leg.

I was thinking it could be DRESS which isn’t technically an allergy but a drug hypersensitivity.

Whats bad about sulfa drugs? I hope this isn't such a noob question.

Girlie: What kind of lesions? can yo udescribe whta they look / feel like? are they itchy?

On the early introduction of abx/drugs i did get some itchy skin sometimes but dismissed it and pushed through.. I rarely get them now but my doc didnt think much of it. I was concerned about liver damage / allergy etc.

Bactrim is banned in the uk . Its really old . .they dont fully understand its folate depleting mechanism. All bodily funtions require folate. Fwiw Bactrim has caused irreversible damage for me ....

Dr k like trimthoprim...he only uses it for 1 month in hard cases..
Rifampin is usually paired with zithromax for its long half life and possible effect on babesia?

Please note that eating the forms of sulfur in garlic and onions is very different from consuming sulfa drugs. Tolerance of one does not mean tolerance of the other. I have an allergy to sulfa drugs - fever, hives, vomiting, throat closing - but I (and others with sulfa drug allergies) can eat garlic and onions with no reaction on any level.

If you are unable to use appropriate combinations of pharmaceutical antibiotics because of allergies or side effects (or any other reason) then please know that people can and do get better with appropriate herbal therapy. Many protocols and formulas exist to choose from.

They weren't itchy. They were isolated round spots/lesions. Not a true rash.

Bactrim is an antibiotic that comes with the risk/side effect of Stevens Johnson syndrome and DRESS.
But, its an effective antibiotic for lyme and co's. Many people do well on it and without issues.

I don't know what my reaction was......but it concerned me enough to stop taking it.

I had googled Stevens johnson syndrome...and the picture that came up - well I can't unsee it .

Bluelyme what could happen if i continue taking rifampin alone? It's working well now, my stretch marks are dissapearing... I took trimethoprim and i think i had a near anaphylaxis reaction after 10 minutes i couldn't breath, dizzness... i can't take zithromax because heart issues, not cephalosporin because allergy (it's not severe but i don't want to risk) i don't have more options....

Rifampin/pyrazinamide/HH/ and a tetra med?

yes take a tetra med. I thought you had ruled them out? Mino is a good one for pairing with Rifampin.

I think Dr. SP prescribes tetracycline. (not sure if he couples it with rifampin though.) Have you tried that one?

you can really take whatever other abx you are comfortable with to prevent rifampin resistance. A great drug to pair with rifamycin class of drugs is a tetracycline like minocycline. This is a great drug to hit neuro issues also.

I took Bactrim for years and no issues goes to show you everyone is different.

I started today with mino, slowly 50 mg twice day until reach 200 mg... but if bart is resistance to mino it will be dangerous to rifampin? I took mino alone for months... Doxy alone....

Total 200 mg daily, right? Not 200x2

Try not to worry about resistance - how long were you on mino alone?

Can you get tetracycline if you decide to switch?
