Ammonia Level - re-test - confusing results

Hi Girlie. The lab range wack a mole. I just had my Ammonia tested, i don't often do this one and actually I wanted to test sulfur nut LLMD said not available and she decided to do the Ammonia lab. So just for your comparison with another lab company here is my result from this week Klan is called GenPath/Bioreference?)

Result 29
Range 11-51 umol/L

It seems sometimes they are still trying to figure out what labs are relevant and how to measure them. Makes me feel like we have been guinea pigs as they build their book of business, tweak.

Were you tested by the same lab? Each lab establishes their own reference ranges according to peer reviewed testing, analyzer type, standard deviation, and blind patient studies using serum from either a reference lab or a compilation of frozen patient samples from their own facility. You are absolutely correct that you have high ammonia. I hope this is somewhat helpful.

Well yours' is in range. Mine were both done at the Quest Lab. Not sure how come the range was changed for the second one.

Funny you should post this now. On the results I got today, mine is 66 with the range of 19-87. I think that's why I've been exhausted for a few weeks.

What are the units? umol/L ?

hmm...so yours' is higher but in range....maybe your lab used the different units of measurement?


Dahlias - do you get your ammonia tested frequently? It was part of my initial consult labs..and the reason I re-tested was because it was out of range.

Not all the time. I'm glad they did this time because I suspected it was high -- I smelled like cat pee. I think it's come down over the past week.

The unit is ug/dL. Is that different?

The clinic doesn't always agree with the lab about acceptable ranges. Think I might hear from them.

So I got a message (they always call when I'm in bed - not accounting for the 3 hour time change) So, it was 7:30 my time and I was still ZZZZZZ

The voice mail said I was in range...lol....yes, I can see that...but why the heck was I supplementing according to the previous range....and now I go up a point and all is good??
Why did the range change in the past 7 months?

I called Quest...and they didn't have an answer to why the ref range changed...and said to go back to my Dr.

I called the Triage nursing line again and left a message asking for an explanation.


What a waste of $$ buying the LOLA if I indeed didn't even need it...if all is good with my ammonia level afterall?
