The ice pick headaches you describe are very uncommon for me, I maybe get 1 per month. My headaches are classic tension type: Feels like a tight band around the back, side, or front of head, sometimes a pressure like feeling (and can be tender to the touch every once in a while). I have them pretty much every day, though they can come and go as the day goes on.
The reason my neurologist is doing a spinal tap is because my headaches get better very quickly when I lie down which is characteristic of a CSF leak. If that is what's wrong it's an easy problem to fix so it's worth checking out. I have a few risk factors for developing a spinal fluid leak as well (I'm tall and I have a bicuspid aortic valve, both of which are linked to dural abnormalities). In the meantime I'm trying acupuncture though its benefit has been mild at best.
My headaches are the only significant problem I have left, I'll be off antibiotics finally in a week and a half or so. My LLMD doesn't think continuing them is doing any good (and may in fact be making my headaches worse as they can cause this kind of side effect). I would be happy to hear any advice on how to tackle them. I've modified my diet in any number of ways but nothing I eat (or don't eat) seems to make a difference. OTC medicines usually don't help so I don't take them much anymore.
It's frustrating to have this still be a problem after many months! But it's also encouraging to know I've gotten rid of most of my other problems in the past year or so. One more to go, right?

Do you have Marfan syndrome?? The docs thought I had it, sounds like the tall and bicuspid aortic valve is describing it. It's a genetic thing by the way. I had a spinal fluid leak once after a spinal tap and it was so dreadful.
