Don't bother reading it. It's incredibly ignorant, and the fact that the New York Times published it decreases my regard for the NYT as a publication. Major trigger warning for those of us who know the realities of this illness.

(If you do read it, then make sure to read the comments, as they largely are much more well-informed than the piece's author!)

Yes the comments are great rebuttals; very well written. At first I wanted to add my own after reading the article but it wasn't necessary to.

I also caught a story on NPR earlier in the week that was dismissive of chronic lyme infection. Aren't there enough studies out there showing that borrelia persists? What gives?!

this article is propaganda for the recent Draft IDSA guidelines, the Shapiro et al Texas lawsuit, and the Shapiro appointment on TBDWG.

the agenda is pretty clear to those in the know.

Yes, this article was disgusting to read! They make it sound like Lyme Disease is the same as getting a cold/flu. And no worries. Freaking IDIOTS!

I did read some of the comments at the bottom of the article. One comment I found very interesting. It was written by ackdavid01 from Nantucket, MA.

He said:
"I was one of the first group on Nantucket to get Lyme Disease and Babesiosis from a tick bite in 1978. The antibiotic regime I received at the time knocked it down, but I still had the symptoms of headaches, arthritic joint pain, and chronic fatigue, reoccur for years afterwards. Three years ago, the rickettsia, which had been relatively dormant, came back and invaded my knee joints with a vengeance. Suddenly, I was barely able to walk. The Oregon doctors denied my hypothesis of chronic Lyme, but eventually I found a doctor that agreed to have a blot test done. The Lyme antibodies were there decades later. The antibiotics knocked it down again, but x-rays show I now have osteoarthritis with no previous indications of that disease which is degeneractive. Lyme disease is real, and it never goes away. Many folks my age develop what's called the "Nantucket limp" as a result of Lyme and Babesiosis. This article is part of the great cover-up led by the AMA who is tethered directly to insurers who don't want to be on the hook to cover long term treatments. ".

Why don't journalists ever follow up on these people. The people that were first diagnosed with Lyme in the 70's.

I have always wondered how many still deal with symptoms OR have been diagnosed now with some type of autoimmune disorder.

about 28 minutes in, this doctor describes a patient who would get tick bites, take 3 or 4 weeks of doxycycline, and be fine. Then he got infected again, and this time it didn't work.

Yes for tick bites - 28 days of doxycycline is the recommendation (ILADS) and is usually effective .

But a tick bite plus symptoms will need more treatment.

I would ask everyone with Lyme Disease to boycott the New York Times and tell friends and loved ones to boycott it as well. They are in a war against us. They want us to stay sick and die. This is the 21st century Tuskegee experiment. This is medieval and has no place in modern society. The CDC is at war with us. I don't understand the reason for their war, but it is a war nonetheless. We need to be just as ruthless with the CDC as they have been to us.

I see someone wrote a politely-balanced yet firm rebuttal to that bad article, and more than a few folks were displeased with the New York Times for publishing it anyway, including myself. Thanks Charlie55!

And maybe the Medium coverage is somewhat of an appeasement...
