Lithium Carbonate for Bipolar. Contraindications?

I have been put on the prescription Lithium today for bipolar. Are there any contraindications for taking Lithium Carbonate with Lyme? I know that lithium orotate is supposed to be good for Lyme, but they didn't give me that option. They're starting me on 300 mg 2x/day. I am mainly concerned about the toxicity from it. My doctor said that you had to make sure your kidneys were working well, have to get your toxicity levels drawn, and that it can cause hypothyroid. I'm really confused as to why he wanted to put me on this drug as I literally sat there and told him that I have a thyroid disease. And my kidneys often don't work well because of the Lyme toxins. Does anybody have experience with taking this?

Yes. I've been being treated for bipolar with mood stabilizers and antipsychotics for about 3 years now. But we're in an acute crisis, and he added the lithium today.

Girlie, we don't know. I haven't been actively killing lyme in about two months. We've just been supporting my body for a few months with different herbs and homeopathics. My ND suspects it's hormone and endocrine disruption. My thyroid is currently hyperthyroid, but that doesn't explain the severe depression, just the anxiety. We thought it would get better with the menstrual cycle started, but it doesn't seem to be the case. One doctor says one thing, the psych doctors say another thing. But I'm left at their mercy because the stuff the ND gave me a few weeks ago isn't helping the psych symptoms.
