Hey, everyone.
So, my dermatologist wants to put me on 6-12 weeks of doxycycline for perioral dermatitis. That seemed a little excessive to me, but I let him prescribe it anyway.
Now that I’m really thinking about
it, I’m hesitant to take them. I’ve not been on doxy since my initial Lyme treatment back in 2016, and I’ve made pretty good friends with my gut since then. I’m not really sure if I want to jeopardize my (mostly) healthy gut flora.
What do you guys think? Has anyone dealt with this? Might there be a way to treat the condition naturally? I kind of feel like I’m in between a rock and a hard place here.
Thanks in advance, y’all.

I know this might not be relevant to everyone, but any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

I know 3 months switching between several different antibiotics did my gut in, definitely. Just doxy wouldn't be as bad. It might not be worth jeopardizing your gut health though.

Have you seen the following article? It turned up, via a Google search.
How I Got Rid of My Perioral Dermatitis Without Antibiotics (and What I Used Instead)

I hope you find something that's safe, effective, and lasting.

I did doxy for my acne before being diagnosed and I actually don't think I benefited greatly from it. I don't think it necessarily destroyed my gut though. I was probably on it for a year. My gut issues started coming years after I stopped taking it or any antibiotics. So I don't think abx ruin everyone's stomach, not to the extent it can't repair itself anyway. Lyme is the main culprit in that regard I believe.

jb - when it’s taken for acne is it a low dose?
My husband worked with someone who took minocycline for several years for his acne.

Same dose to treat lyme.
But of course we shouldn’t be on minocycline for a few weeks to treat a tick bite ... smh

How exactly does the doxy work against perioral dermatitis? do they know what causes that condition, or do they just say idiopathic and leave it at that? if there is a chance it is driven by occult infections, I'd personally rather explore some of the alternatives like what DudeAbides posted, herbals usually are a bit more gut-friendly anyhow.

I for one do not support the use of long term antibiotics. I’m not 100% certain but there are very few applications that I know outside if this condition and chronic Lyme where abx are used this way.
I look at antibiotics in a simmilar way as synthetic fertilizers. So yes they’ve isolated key sumbtances to make them more economical to produce, but it’s well known that by eliminating the trace minerals in natural fertilizer, the soil eventually becomes depleted.
Broad spectrum herbal/ anti microbe tinticures have all kinds of anti inflammatory and other trace elements to help balance the body. Note , each herb is broad spectrum in itself.
Abx have a place but were developed for their economic factor and are really designed with accute conditions in mind.

I've been taking minocycline for 6+ months without problems. It was really the only thing that worked well for bartonella.

Long term as in permanent? No, I don't think I'm in support of that if that's even an option. But for several months? Yeah I think antibiotics have their place when we are in need of aggressive treatment and all else is failing.
