Same problem with detecting bacterial proteins. There might not be any in the sample.
I had surprisingly consistent positive PCR tests for borrelia burgdorferi. Bartonella was a bit more elusive, and I got a false negative the first time.

They’re not always expensive.
I had pcr both urine and blood by an unknown lab back east (Canada) and it was $125 per infection .
Canada is a complex situation, as health care is heavily regulated. This may or may not reflect the true cost.
