I apologize for another question this week. Tests have been coming in and doctor is out of town. The test results confuse me, even after researching online today and yesterday.

The ANA Screen with reflex to ANA9 showed negative. That is clear enough. But the Anti-Nuclear Antibody (ANA), IgG by IFA showed "detected" with a note with an H for high. Then it showed the reference range as <1:80, which I thought is negative. Also, a speckled pattern was noted.

Just got back from eye doctor for itchy, watery eyes, especially at night, which I know could be from Lyme. She said it is from bacteria in eye, and that it is dry eye. She prescribed an antibiotic to put in eye. I also have vitiligo, which I thought to be autoimmune.

Does any of that make sense? I am puzzled by it all and what it means. It looks like two negatives, to me, on autoimmune, yet the one showed as high, even though it is less than 1:80. Yet, I have some autoimmune symptoms.

Again, I apologize for another question this week. I realize there is not "limit," but don't want to treat this forum and people like I have the only problems.

first - don't apologize. We're all reading/posting on here because we want to be a part of this community ...and if people weren't posting...we'd have nothing to do...lol. (joke)

It looks like you had more than the 'usual' tests for the ANA. - well more than what I've seen on this forum before.

When my regular Dr. (prelyme diagnosis) tested me for autoimmune diseases....I didn't get all that information. If I can find it...I'll see what mine says.

Maybe the IgG IFA being detected means it's an older antibody (IgG vs IgM) and it's in your past? So not current...anymore.
But then why is the < 1:80 considered high?

When I had dry eyes (for years) - they didn't water...they were...well...dry... smile

Thanks for the information, Girlie. Read it, and still thrown by it all. At the bottom of the link you sent, it reads "If ANA are detected by ELISA, then Antinuclear Antibody (ANA), HEp-2, IgG by IFA will be added." But the only ANA test that showed as "detected" was the IgG by IFA.

Recently, all this has gotten so much worse, it made me wonder if the autoimmune was pushing it. The the dry eyes and, before that, vitiligo. Not sure if this does mean autoimmune is involved or not. Seems with vitiligo, it would have to be unless there is another reason for vitiligo I haven't found.

Then I've red where several people on this forum have vitiligo.

The range on my Quest test report says exactly this:

<1:40 negative
1:40 - 1:80 low antibody level
>1:80 elevated antibody level

only greater than 180 is high.



Here's a list in increasing order of possible results. This of it as a whole number - so the zero matters.
1:40
1:80
1:160
1:320
1:640
1:1280

BUT, I think having a pattern means something,.there are different patterns to.

"Rumis" are the ones who know this stuff.

The test results I received had the same parameters. That is what threw me, but what you mention, astroman, makes sense. Evidently, under <1:80 means something has been detected, but not conclusive for a positive.

So with that in mind, maybe symptoms play a part. Since vitiligo and dry eyes are happening, it could mean some type of autoimmune. Sjogren's is a possibility with the dry eyes, but I have often read Lyme can also cause that. And, again, vitiligo.

It has all gotten worse since starting a herb mix with houyttunia. Never taken it before until now. Swollen gland in left side of neck, feeling of weakness much more pronounced.

If you treat infection and viruses, can autoimmune symptoms fade?

If that were the case, Id be 100% free and clear of autoimmune as ive tested for many other viruses and infection.

Its hit or mis and luck on finding the cause of autoimmune, usually with sick people its several things. The wrong foods per individual and leaky gut can also cause autoimmune.

In my case, part of it is better.

Don't know how I missed it, but found in my blood tests another ANA1 test. The ANA titer is 1:160, which is positive. However, the CRP test was normal and not close to out of range.

Since this is not an autoimmune forum, I may be going too far with questions. But I guess all the new symptoms and autoimmune being involved has me nervous as I don't know if it means something is real bad. That is where my mind is at.

With high EBV results, thinking that could be cause. Sorry for going on about this. I know astroman has dealt with a lot of this, but wondering if others have and can treating infections and virus help with ANA.
