How / why is it that some healthcare "professionals" still claim lyme is no big deal?

My non lyme Dr is totally supportive and on board .

I count my lucky stars that I have her and she believes me... and supports my treatment at the J clinic.

Keeping my fingers crossed that this doesn’t change

Astroman, those are some good points, "highly intelligent idiots." I also grant that some of these people are fairly brilliant on their own merits, but in spite of that they are locked into a brutal and dogmatic groupthink that clouds them. So no matter the sheer force of their own individual brilliance, they are unable to find the creative conceptual brilliance to crack out of the groupthink dynamic, or have been so thoroughly formatted by the system their software can no longer transcend beyond the thoughts it has implanted (having been formed by the system, many are just bland cogs that help the machine run seamlessly - here I am getting a little "Matrix-y" with my metaphors, lol).

I have a newer one out of school, doesn't know much, but listens and willing to test immune function for me. Is open to the fact that I had lyme and knows about / does not debate the realities of it - listens.

My older GPs refused anything new most of the time. But they knew non-lyme basics well from experience, the new younger GP doesn't even know that well.

It's a far better attitude than most doctors I have encountered, but it's not going to help me.

I wouldn’t expect a regular GP to treat lyme - just as I wouldn’t expect my GP to treat my cancer diagnosis or heart issues - that’s what specialists are for...

I’m glad my dr said she doesn’t know how to treat my lyme instead of leading me down the wrong road.

What she does do now - since my diagnosis - is she offers a few weeks of abx to any patients that come in to her office with a tick bite or even a suspected tick bite.
I’m happy that my case is helping others get treatment before it goes chronic.

Glad to hear that many of your GPs are open and understanding (and willing to admit when they don't know things). Much as I grouse, I'm lucky as well, my GP (who truly is excellent), was initially reluctant when it came to the situation around this disease complex, but has really come around as I've tried to show him some of the literature. I guess I just get frustrated because I had to go through about 20-30 docs who were so obstinate and arrogant, their mounds of experience and reams of diplomas weren't worth a whit when it came to my situation (and many of them were quite disrespectful and moreover extremely categorical in their statements when the evidence just wasn't there and couldn't back them up, and that really aggravated me).

Sometimes we have to figure out things on our own or stumble upon a creative thinker. One thing this whole adventure has taught me, personal agency is key. Always try to keep self-educating, so you can keep trying to build the best ladder you can to get out of the disease hole.

It is called cognitive dissonance. And/or demoralization according to Russian defector terms.

Basically, no matter the facts presented the person might be believe what you are saying at that very moment but will deny you ever told him that and continue to believe what is false.

Even when he had that gutless puke climate scientists Neil Degrasse Tyson on, Joe asked Neil about Lyme Disease and just dead silence at the end of the microphone. I appreciate the people that aren't gutless pukes and speak their mind from time to time. I still like Neil, he's said some good things about whistle blower Edward Snowden, but he's too much of don't rock the boat kind of guy.

George has rubbed off on a lot of great people in our time, I'm very appreciative of that.
