So I live in Canada where they are only now admitting we have ticks that carry Lyme disease. My husband has an opportunity to work in Florida and get insurance with his job. Nothing is covered in Canada, so we're trying to decide if we should make the switch. It would only be worth the huge upheaval (leaving my teaching position, family and aging parent) if I can find someone near, (or even no so near Miami) who is actually a Lyme literate doctor with a record of successfully treating Lyme. I have been on the net for 4 hours already trying to get some information and to my dismay, most of the comments are about over-use of antibiotics, recurring chronic Lyme, treatments not covered by insurance, and charlatans. EEK! I heard that they know how to help Lyme patients in the States, but ……..that's not what I'm reading. Can anyone give me a ray of hope? Pretty desperate here.,

When you say nothing is covered in Canada - what are you referring to in particular? Medications?
Or a NP Dr?
I have coverage with my husbands employer.
I’m also Canadian - west coast.

Florida isn’t the best state for Lyme docs - I suggest you start a new thread: Lookimg for LLMD in/near Miami Florida.

We do have a LLMD now - in Alberta but last time I checked he had a long wait list and wasn’t taking anymore names.

There is an MD who treats Lyme in Toronto, I'm not sure if I can say the name of his clinic on this site, and he works with a ND who had lyme. I live north of there, but every test I have to pay for and all the antibiotics and supplements, thousands of dollars. We do not have insurance through my husband's work up here, but would in the States. I am seeing a ND on Tuesday here. My school board insurance only covers 3 or 4 visits to ND.

Are the initials TC? If so, I thought he wasn't taking anymore patients at this point.

Would you be interested in the information of the LLMD in Alberta? (In case you decide to stay in Canada).
It is a long way to travel though. ... although appointments may be spaced apart by a few months with phone appts in between...not sure how he does it.

If you are in Florida - you could travel to the Carolinas...or Washington DC to see a LLMD.

I fly to Washington - but after the first two appointments they are spaced apart 3-4 months apart...and you can do phone appts every other one. That may be an option for you as well.
It's a great clinic...with a LLMD who has been treating lyme and co's for many years. He has trained NP's/PA's to take on patient loads...so the wait to get in isn't long.

I've seen Dr TC, didn't go through with treatment though, it would've been too aggressive for me condition at that time. I've also seen the lyme ND north of the GTA, Dr. AL. Not a good experience imo. I would recommend going elsewhere if that's the Dr you're going to see. There are several lyme practitioners in Ontario you can also check out.

Welcome! Most LLMD’s don’t take insurance. Also, Rx drug coverage varies based on the insurance plan. Some plans may not cover all the Rx or may only cover cost for a limited time. There are some states that now have laws protecting Lyme patients from having Rx coverage cut off. Not sure if Florida is among them.

As far as testing goes, insurance would cover standard labs like Labcorp or Quest. Lyme/co testing done by specialty labs is usually out of pocket.

Nothing about treating Lyme is cheap or easy. Just wanted you to be aware of these realities before making a life altering move.

How long have you been sick? If you’re newly infected, the consensus seems to be that antibiotics are best.

There are other non-antibiotic options for treatment including various herbal protocols, rife, bee venom therapy, and now, Disulfiram.

How do you know what's too aggressive for you? I mean myself. There is a Lyme nd in Alliston, Ont., but I didn't have confidence in him. I'm trying one in Richmond Hill on Tues., but is it possible to be treated for Lyme without antibiotics and get to a good place? Anyone?

Most likely her. Very friendly but not good at successfully treating patients sad

2care: do let us know what your experience is like. I'm curious. There is also one in Milton, I think a naturopathic dr who treats lyme patients, and another one in Richmond Hill but northern part, near Stouffville.

No it was a male nd DC who studied out East. He is the one who got me the proper test from the states for $500 which tests your urine after you have had ultraviolet light to bring out the bacteria and then workout to get them into your system before they hide again, then you give a sample and that goes to a New York Connexion lab. The one in Richmond Hill studied with under Dr. Howorwitz who invented the test that many use to see if it is likely you have it or not.
I wonder if anyone else has been treated in Toronto or Florida successfully.
