"I can't abide everything being automated, people being replaced by computers, everything being online instead of in the real world. At this rate, computers will be doing everything, no one will have a job and we will never leave the house or ever speak to another human being. It's complete madness. "

Yes, its maddening but........... specialized, or odd jobs will be left. Jobs with repeating tasks (white and blue collar) are the ones that will go. Some white collar elimination is next, once its figured out high paid CEO are not needed. Math probability algorithms can replace them and their golf outings with other CEO's. And sales...........Toyota sells new cars out of a huge "vending machine car ramp" in........is it..Texas?? But the small used car lot will always have people.
As far as manual labor goes; all is not lost, If the robot operation cost more than the repair, a human is still the better option and will be for a long time.. Remember repairing and assembling on an assembly line (robotics have already been there for years) are opposites. Humans can do wider variety if trained or naturally inclined, but not good for repetition (because of error).
In the past people more relied on "born with skills". Today some young people have no idea what their born with skills are, they have not found them. Born with skills are mostly found in childhood- if its allowed..... and that is part of the problem with modern "helicopter" patenting. Kids are not allowed to be kids and / or accidentally find out what their skills are. Everything is not learned in school. Kids play is where learning starts, and then into young adult development.
"Dont build a tree fort in the woods, its too dangerous" - most builders did this as children. "Dont get a beater car and try to fix it, we'll get you a new one at graduation"- so much for mechanics. "Never talk to strangers, they could be bad people" - so much for interpersonal skills. This is oversimplification, but you get the point.
The biggest issue with modern digital age is it promotes lazyness.
