Is it normal to herx one month after starting antibiotics?

Hi everyone. Started antibiotics over a month ago for Lyme and Bartonella, and initially my brain just felt better and clearer and I wasn't getting any more mystery bruising (which occurs mainly on my legs). A few days ago I noticed a small bruise starting to appear on my calf, and yesterday another one popped out on the other calf. I'm also extremely depressed and can't concentrate again. Is this a herx? I have an IR sauna appt this morning and I'm almost afraid to go.

Why are you afraid to go to the sauna? Have you been before? Was it a bad experience?

Yes, you can be herxing.

The symptoms you described could be babesia.

Symptoms of coinfections can start to show up after treatment starts. Talk to your LLMD.

Yes it could be a herx after one month of killing - the toxins kept building during that time

Cignet...I was diagnosed with CIRS from mold a year ago, but chased that diagnosis for years before I finally got an answer. Moved out of my house and was treating the CIRS for about five months but wasn't getting any better, so I asked for testing through Igenex. I've probably been sick with all this for years.

WalkingbyFaith...I had just gone to the sauna a few days ago and that's when all these symptoms started up again. I'm afraid that right now it might be too much for my body to handle because I've had reactions to the sauna in the past. I also have air hunger that just started a few weeks ago. I've had it in the past when I was living in the moldy house, but it had stopped when I left. Igenex didn't pick up Babesia, but I guess that doesn't mean anything. Thanks again...will talk to my LLMD.

I’m so sorry you have CIRS/mold. I have it, too. I haven’t gotten much better either and am super sensitive.

I have been on Fluconazole and then Nystatin plus supplements and Xyzal for MCAS starting back in July (Nystatin September). They have helped. I felt like I had a toxin producing factory in my gut. My current doc thinks I have mold in my gut. If you haven’t taken any Rx antifungals, you might want to see about that. It has gradually helped my chemical sensitivities.

Do you take binders?

Zeobind seemed to help me the most for about 2 weeks, but then I felt bad again. Kept taking it daily at full dose. Stopped in December due to an acute illness and restarted (but not daily anymore) some time this month.

I still have never gotten to use a sauna.

Listen to your body. If it doesn’t feel right for you, don’t force it.

BTW, have you done IV PC for mold? My doctor still wants me to do that. She thinks it really helps. I haven’t yet and may not be able to due to finances.

If sauna is too much, what about other detox therapies - epsom salt baths, coffee enemas?

WalkingbyFaith...I haven't started on antifungals yet. My doctor just added Rifampin to the Bactrim and Omnicef combo, so maybe that'll help a little bit. I do take binders every day...either charcoal or bentonite clay. I was on Welchol as well, but that was prescribed by my mold doctor who I'm no longer seeing so I haven't taken that in awhile. I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this as well, but it really helps to know that there's someone out there who understands exactly what you're going through so thank you. I hope I answered all your questions...the mold/lyme brain is real smile

It’s phosphatidylcholine through an IV. It’s part of the Patricia Kane protocol for neurological illnesses to stabilize membranes. A lot of mold/Lyme doctors are using it. My doctor believes it makes you less susceptible to parasites, mold, Candida, etc. There’s more to the whole protocol (which I don’t know much about).

My very first herx was a little over a month after starting antibiotics. All my more recent herxes have started sooner after starting antibiotics but that first one took awhile to kick in.
