Hi all - I'm curious to find out more from the community on Bartonella.

1) What is the best testing available to see if I have it?

2) Is it possible it resolves on its own? (I read this on one site)

3) Is it possible I could have just that and not Lyme (from a flea from a cat)? Or that I did have Lyme that was successfully treated and Bartonella stuck around?

I found this in "New Paradigms in Lyme Disease Treatment" and found this, and it was stunning how much it described me:

"People who have active Bartonella symptoms have much more pain than people who are manifesting predominantly Babesia-related symptoms. The first thing out of their mouths is usually, “You have to help me with my pain.” They have pain in their joints and the connective tissue around their joints. This joint pain will migrate to other areas of the body. So for instance, patients with active Bartonella might have knee pain, but just when they are about to go to the doctor for the pain, the pain will migrate to the left elbow. The hallmark symptom of Bartonella is sensitivity and tenderness on the bottom of the feet, especially the soles."

I don’t know which test is best for Bart -
I was lucky and tested positive via pcr with an unknown lab several years ago.

If you were healthy with fully functioning immune system - Bart could be handled BUT when we have lyme and possibly Babesia, the immune system can’t .

I think I had Bartonella for most my life - and didn’t know - because my immune system kept it in check until a very stressful period in my life plus possibly a tick bite.

So you treated lyme thus far?

I'm not sure. I had a bit/rash in 2016, doxy right away based on "cellulitis"...was never diagnosed with Lyme but wondering looking back. I've also wondered if I've had Bartonella and something activated it.

all it takes is one kitty scratch ... if interested and dont wanna fork out cash for a galaxy labs or dnaconnexions test for bart then one can do a quik dip giemsa stain on a standard blood smear and view under standard brighfield microscopy way longer than the 15 min any labtech will do. my whole setup with supplies was half of what the panel costs and i can use it to check progress. see the thread here beginners guide to microscopy by mustard seed or the microscopy thread on lymenet.
the stains were acquired from vet supply as checking cattle for babesia is commonplace.
borrelia is also easily viewed at 1000x in live blood !
according to my research and self testing as bartonella is a gram negative intercellular systemic infection that loves the endothelial lining of vessels ,it is highly unlikely it will ever resolve on its own , even in a healthy individual it is very immunosuppressive. in people with hiv , bartonella is what used to kill them with a wasting like syndrome...galaxy labs has a good utoob on bart pathology...

So it is possible to have it and not Lyme? (Or Lyme in remission and active Bartonella)

possible but unlikely according to dnaconnexions 9/10 peoples samples have borrelia present. whether symtomatic or not? its in saliva mosquitoes spiders and fleas mites etc sooo... and according to ilads 30 days of antibiotics for borrelia is extremely inadequate for eradication as it has a 21 day replication cycle ....it also is intercellular and encyst in the presence of abx...

if testing is unavailable to u , try hh2 and allicin or oil of oregano to induce bart herx or try andrographis to induce a borrelia herx and see which wins?

PCR testing for bartonella is possible, but difficult. I had to repeat the test several times before they were able to detect bartonella DNA. Also the blood tests never found antibodies to bartonella.

What did show up repeatedly was low protein and increased vitamin B6.

1. Galaxy lab or DNA ConneXions, based on what I have heard. Also look into mold, as for some people Bartonella and mold toxicity symptoms are indistinguishable. (See Neil Nathan's book Toxic.) High VEGF also can indicate Bartonella.

2. Maybe in completely healthy people? But not for someone with immunological issues or chronic illness.

3. Definitely possible to get Bartonella from a cat. Definitely possible to get Bartonella from a tick without Borrelia (though less likely). Also possible you contracted it years ago from a cat, but it waited until Lyme messed up your immune system before making an appearance symptomatically. (These are opportunistic bacteria.)

1- I believe MDL, Frye and Galaxy labs are the best for bartonella

2- if you are chronically I'll that points to an immune system problem so bartonella should be treated along with the immune system

3- yes of course you can have it sans borrelia. I did and am one of the sickest people here

Which test did you order? I see 10+ options ranging from $140 to $995.
