I've been struggling with adrenal fatigue the entirety of the time I've been sick. In fact it was the first issue I had. However it's still there.
I've recently gone back to a ketogenic diet but my sleep has slipped fast- and it wasnt good to begin with. I'm not sure if the adrenal fatigue (HPA dysfunction) has more to do with gut issues or the remaining autoimmune issues I have. Right now the worst thing I'm dealing with is getting rocked awake at all hours if the night then staying awake the rest of the night with my heart rate and adrenaline so high. Has anyone here rid themselves of adrenal issues? If so, how?

I've tried so many things (supplements/herbs) to heal adrenal fatigue and I've come to the conclusion that the only thing that works is hydrocortisone, which makes you fat really fast, even at low dosages.

Vitamin C helps too but in a more complex way that I don't fully understand myself.

Schisandra helps too if you chug half the bottle, which isn't really affordable.

I think ultimately we just need to get rid of Lyme and hope the adrenals can rest/heal themselves.

I guess it's the inflammation driving the hypathalamus issues which causes it. I still feel I need to work on my gut, though. Ketosis isn't working well for me atm. Have you noticed a diet that works?

hi Aerose91 smile the only thing I would recommend for diet in regards to adrenal fatigue is to stay away from low carb diets. It's hard to say though, everyone is different when it comes to dieting. I just think when dealing with Lyme we need carbs to support our immune system. In moderation of course. We also deal often with depression, I know serotonin needs carbs to be produced.

Aerose, I'm dealing with this as well. Not sure if you saw my story but I'm a fixed income trader. The volatility in the global treasury markets was like nothing I've ever seen, even compared to 2008. Was up trading day and night for about 2 weeks straight. I literally couldnt calm down, couldnt sleep, i was shaking from all the adrenaline. Now I've lost the ability to sweat. Not 1 drop of sweat in my sauna, just went for a run to test it again, not a bit of sweat.

I think my adrenals are on the mat from all that excess adrenaline i had. Not sure how to fix this as I've been so busy havent even had a chance. I have a prescription for metropolol here, i'm so ticked had completely forgotten about it, should have used it when i was going through everything may have saved me.

Wish I had some advice. Curious have you tried any adrenal support pills? Guessing theyre all garbage? Also, someone recommended raw kelp for my adrenal fatigue/inability to sweat, may help. Finally, phosphydtylserine may be something else to consider for cutting off that cortisol spike at night. Will do some research when i have the time, dont know enough about the HPA axis.

Here's my list of some of the things I tried for adrenal fatigue, hope it might help you:

Adrenal Cortex: did not work for me.

Schisandra: works for sure but very unreliable. Not sure if it has to do with absorption or what. Need to take big dosages though, not affordable.

Holy basil: did nothing.

Ashwagandha: worked at first then stops, interferes with thyroid.

Licorice root: stopped taking as it interferes with testosterone. Didn't take long enough to notice anything.

All types of Rhodiola: barely works.

Vitamin C: definitely works but not always strong enough.

Vitamin B12: works very short term, in the range of 20-30 minutes.

Iodine: works but not always strong enough.

Gingseng (American and Korean): weak.

Siberean Eulethero: Nothing.

Ginger: does something but can't really place what it does exactly.

L-Theanine: works by mellowing out caffeine.

Rhemmania: feels very similar to Schisandra.

Salt water: feels similar to the times Vitamin C works.

Caffeine: works but it's kind of a double edged sword.

Hydrocortisone: definitely works, but rapid weight gain.

Adderall: my love, legendary, but had to say goodbye.

TUDCA Plus has noticeably and consistently reduced chronic inflammation for me since I started it in mid-January. I highly recommend going through a bottle to see if it helps anything. Only thing that has worked for reducing my toxic inflammation in the 3.5 years I have been treating. Has done what no binder has done.

Ashwaghanda - I ran out weeks ago and couldn’t find my cheap powder at Homegoods, so did without. I am suffering significantly and just now ordered a different brand on Amazon. I never noticed what it did until I quit taking it. Have been high strung, revved up, and stressed out. Hoping that getting back on will downshift the throttle.

Yes, over the span of a year I did:

Blood cortisol am
Blood cortisol pm
3 point blood cortisol
24 hour cortisol urine
Saliva cortisol and dhea

All of them came back out of range (low).

I'm not sure which test is the most accurate, but since I covered them all I think it should confirm it.

I honestly don't even know anymore why I did all those tests at the time, one should have been enough.

It's so funny how we all respond differently to different adaptogens and other supps.

Rhodiola - made me horribly irritable.
Eleuthero - made me sleep all day.
Holy Basil - made me amped up and unable to sleep at all.
Ashwagandha - lovely and helpful, been on it for years.
Dr. Wilson's Adrenal Rebuilder - helpful after a crash.
Licorice (DGL) - not sure.
Chamomile - helps to chill.
CBD - yessssssssssss.
DNRS - helps more than anything else I have tried.
Meditation, mindfulness, yoga - great to chill out nervous system.
Melatonin - helped a lot to regulate sleep.
Sleep hygiene - super important.
Omega 3s - helpful as precursors.
Acupuncture - helpful if done regularly.
Caffeine and other stimulants - the enemy! Don't tax your system and leave yourself more depleted than before.

I have HPA axis dysfunction as well. My cortisol is slightly high in the morning and then the low end of normal the rest of the day. I make almost no estrogen or progesterone, but I have symptoms of an excess of both. Thyroid, testosterone, DHEAs, and pregnenolone are normal. Have you had everything checked? Anything interesting?

Adrenal "fatigue" is not the same for all. Its a generic term used loosely.

Per 24 hs saliva, I had higher than normal cortisol in early AM and night/midnight. Conventional tests showed similar.

I figured out what on that list above (and more) were "uppers " for me and "downers", and took them accordingly as natural supps dont last long.

Ashwagonda made me jittery, holy basil made me mellow in 15 minutes- opposite of some people here. I took downers at night and AM, uppers in the late AM and afternoon.

*****I also took Rx Propranerlo which is used for lowering adrenal/cortisol based high energy/anziety. It made me employable. Its also a BP med that that seems to work off adrenal/cortisol control. I only take 1/3 the amount today, also in early 50's with high BP in family members. ****

Three years after my last ABX, my energy is more controllable. It took that long. Since I also take thyroid med, my energy will never be completely normal.

I've had adrenal fatigue for 9 years now. I've tried absolutely everything but still honestly dont know the underlying cause of it. Is it the autoimmunity? What's driving the inflammation now? I hist have no idea. I would like to believe I can get on a protocol that would HEAL it

My general feeling on adrenal fatigue is that its caused by either an acute stress (like i had recently i.e. market spasms causing me to not sleep for a week) which shuts down production or cortisol, or else some sort of infection (or more likely mold) which causes chronic stress on the autonomic nervous system, and the constant release of cortisol until the system burns out. Just from watching people comment on here it seems like mold/MCS/MCAS are all the same thing. Cortisol also lowers cytokine production, so that seems like it could turn into a viciuos cycle where adrenal fatigue casues lower cortisol causes inflammation causes low cortisol ad infinitum. I'd like to read a lot more about this stuff, this seems like a rabbit hole that could be very beneficial to me to go down, given the intimate relationship between inflammation/cortisol/adrenals/autonomic nervous system, ALL of which i have problems with.

My guess is this is the type of thing where DNRS/deep breathing/HRV biofeedback all could be extremely beneficial.

Just started back up on the tudca yesterday and def notice less inflammation today, thanks again for that rec
