A lot to try to answer, but to potsnpans, I found the preprinted abstract you linked after I had formulated my theory. It supports what I believe is happening. ARDS is a respiratory failure characterized by widespread inflammation of the lungs. The patients definitely have the inflammation, but ARDS impairs the exchange of CO2 and O2 in the blood. The lungs can't move enough to make it happen and a ventilator helps the lungs move to do give the patient more air. But in COVID patients, the impairment of CO2 and O2 exchange is what causes the ARDS. Its backwards. Ventilators only breathe for you, they don't improve the gas exchange in the lungs. That is why the death rate is so high for patients on the ventilators that have COVID. The liver does all it can to reduce the increased oxidative stress from the increase in heme but because hypoxia has set in, it can't function properly and ALT increases. As for references, I think I have 13 on this computer but I probably have that many on my work computer as well. It took a lot of time as I was looking in out of the way pathways. For instance, this isn't on too many people's radar.
https://portlandpress.com/biochemj/article-abstract/407/1/61/41930 This shows that carbonic anhydrase inside RBC's have a 32 kda sequence homology that can be mimicked by a virus. If you read about
carbonic anhydrase, you will see it is responsible CO2 and fluid regulation are what it is does in the lungs. That is the problem these patients are having.
https://febs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1432-1033.1981.tb05697.x It literally takes 15 to 20 seconds to scroll through folders just to get to the folder on COVID and then I have to read through those. I didn't post references because things like
https://www.jbc.org/content/259/4/2570.short really don't help most people but it helps me see how things work.
As for ventilators, they are better than nothing but we need to change the way we are treating this because they aren't improving oxygen levels. Max oxygen from the start (what they did for England's Prime Minister) and immune supportive measures while reducing viral load would be my preferred treatment.
