I’m curious as to what others’ LLMDs have said or your own personal knowledge is with regards to Ceftin crossing the BBB.
Most info that I can find online says that Ceftin does cross the BBB “to some extent” and that it is the only 2nd generation cephalosporin to do so - but almost every source lacks more specifics and then goes on to say IV Rocephin is the best (which is well known). Perhaps the 500mg BID dosage recommended for Lyme helps to ensure enough gets across to be effective? Most resources list Ceftin in the first tier of Lyme antibiotics along with doxy (which is the gold standard) and Amox so I would think that would mean it has BBB penetration.
I’m currently on a 1 to 2 week trial of Ceftin to see if I have residual lyme vs. an autoimmune issue and since my symptoms are all in the brain I’d find it more reassuring to know it’s getting in there - otherwise I’ll probably have to wait until my LLMD returns to his office to trial rocephin.
IV abx are the best for penetrating the b/b barrier.
Not all llmd’s use doxy - mine uses minocycline instead - it has better b/b barrier penetration.
There’s more to it than b/b barrier penetration though.
The problem with amoxicillin is it has a half life of 1 hour so it should be dosed three time’s a day which is an inconvenience. Even then, it’s not in your system long.
Also some abx help bust cysts or dissolve biofilms.
