Buhner normally just recommends eating the powdered root mixed with a small glass of fruit juice
he suggests full dose is around a heaped tablespoon 3x a day or 30g in total of the dry herb - so it is quite a bit of herb and the taste is somewhat earthy.
he says he believes consuming the whole herb is the best.
personally, i prefer to mix it into a stiff paste with a little water and a bit of olive oil and find it easier to eat like that - i use turmeric in the same paste so it convenient and much less gritty in the teeth!
for tinctures the dose is quite a bit less - he states 1/2 to 1teaspoon 3-6x per day ( usually a 1:5 tincture at 50% alcohol) ( teaspoons are normally taken to be 5ml in metric units )
you can take the tincture any way you like - it doesn't have to be held under the tongue or anything like that.
tinctures are in general usually taken 10 or 20minutes before food in a little water - but you can also take it in a beverage
i would not boil it or heat it too aggressively as you may damage some of the active components
