i could be wrong but as far as i remember when i was reading into it, when it comes to the lactulose test - a peak when it reaches the colon is normal. Peaks before that on the timescale indicate SIBO
But as I think you infer - transit time can vary from person to person so some interpretation is needed.
i think there are now a bunch of different breaths tests apart from those for SIBO
I dont think so...lactose is not supposed to reach the colon. it should be absorbed in the small intestine, if it isnt it reaches the colon and causes hydrogen gas production, which indicates malabsorption. Was reading about
this for a while yesterday.
This is also why lactose and fructose are "FODMAPs". I could not understand that...every website i went to states that fodmaps are supposed to be "fermentable" and non-digestible. Then they go on to describe lactose and fructose as fodmaps, even though if you pull up wikipedia or any GI website it will tell you that lactose and fructose are rapidly digested by enzymatic activity in the small intenstine. Not a single website ever addressed this contradiction.
Frustrated me for like 3hrs until I found the answer in a research paper...lactose and fructose are FODMAPS because even though theyre supposed to be digestible in a normal person, like 30% of the population doesnt make the enzymes needed to digest them...therefore making them a FODMAP (for some people).
