Exercise is great for health, but not very effective for weight loss. Diet is much more important, with regard to body weight. While there are some that believe that calories don't matter, the reality is that they do.
While a minor inconvenience, I suggest logging your daily meals into some online calculator like Cronometer (or, something similar) for at least three days. That will give you an approximation of how many calories you're eating in a day. Compare that with your approximate calorie needs (again, using an online calculator) and see if you're eating an excess or close to maintenance levels of calories. A calorie deficit is needed for weight loss.
How that deficit is created is up to you. Fasting is a trend that's currently popular. If one stops eating 3-4 hours before bed and waits an hour to eat their first meal the following morning, that's a built-in fast of about 12 hours. That makes sense to me, because I don't think most people should be grazing all day and eating multiple meals and snacks. The more times people eat, the more potential they have to overeat.
I would not suggest going on some fad diet that either excludes or exalts one group of macronutrients.
In the end, this is something you have to trial-and-error on your own, as it involves flavor preferences, budget, ideologies, convenience, your schedule, and other factors. Just remember there are lean, healthy people all over the planet who are successful in achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight while eating completely opposing diets.
