I take Magnesium Citrate and a Multi-vitamin that probably has some calcium in it, but I don't take any calcium as a separate supplement. Seems like you would be fine to just try the Magnesium Citrate alone.
I take at least 500mg per day, and you can take more depending on how you tolerate it. From what I've heard the Citrate is better than the Oxide.
As a general rule, you can build up gradually on the Magnesium Citrate until your bowels loosen and then back off some and hold that dosage. You can also do this with Vitamin C (I use Nutribiotic Sodium Ascorbate powder). Build up to bowel tolerance with dosage.
Hope this helps and welcome to the forum!
